BASEBALL

PUNXSUTAWNEY 15, BRADFORD 5, 6 INNINGS

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – Punxsutawney’s offense proved to be too much for Bradford, as the homestanding Chucks knocked off the Owls, 15-5, Wednesday.

Dylan Huey had a two-run base hit for Punxsy, while Lucas Ambler had a double and Lance Pennington and Braxton Giavedoni triples.

Brandon Matthews and Peyton Graham combined on an 8-hitter on the mound for the Chucks.

Connor Vecellio had a big day for Bradford hitting a two-run home run in the first and driving in three on the day.

Andrew Bacha took the loss for the Owls.  

BROOKVILLE 11, BROCKWAY 7

BROCKWAY, Pa. – A six-run seventh inning propelled visiting Brookville to an 11-7 win at Brockway Wednesday.

The Raiders trailed 6-5 entering the seventh but Kyle Dunkle got the rally started with a one-out, two-run single to give Brookville the lead. Ben Caun followed with a two-run single, and later in the inning Austin Cook added a two-run base hit.

Brookville held an early 4-0 lead before Brockway used a five-run third to take 6-4 advantage.

Dunkle was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored for the Raiders. Logan Thrush was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Ben Reitz was 2-for-4 andCaun 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs.

Seth Shugarts paced Brockway going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Hunter Antonuccio was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and Mike Martino was 1-for-4 with a double.  

Reitz got the win in relief of Wyatt Shaffer going 4 ⅔ innings allowing one run on two hits while striking out four.

Corey Carr took the loss for Brockway giving up nine run on six hits and six walks while striking out six.

COUDERSPORT 10, SMETHPORT 0, 6 INNINGS

SMETHPORT, Pa. – Navada Waterman and Elliott Hite combined on a six-inning no hitter, as visiting Coudersport shutout Smethport, 10-0, Wednesday afternoon.

Waterman started and went the first four innings walking three and striking out three to get the win. Hite followed with two innings of work that saw him walk two and strike out five.

Waterman helped himself at the plate going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Sheldon Van Pelt was also 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI for the Falcons, while Hunter Redmond went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Zach Suchocki took the loss for Smethport.

CRANBERRY 3, NORTH CLARION 2

SENECA, Pa. – Seth Pochran drew a bases loaded walk with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Cranberry a 3-2 win over North Clarion Wednesday afternoon.

Tyler Gustafson started the inning with a double and moved to third on a Jake Felmlee infield single before scoring on the walk to Pochran.

That ruined a seventh-inning comeback by North Clarion, which trailed 2-0 going to the seventh before scoring twice in the inning.

Cranberry had taken the 2-0 lead with single runs, both scored by Evan Lutz, in the first and the third innings.

Gustafson and Felmlee each had a pair of hits to lead the way for the Berries, who also saw Brendan Zerbe reach base four times (a single, an error, a hit by a pitch and a walk).
Zerbe threw five shutout innings for Cranberry striking out six. Tylor Ziegler picked up the win in relief.

PORT ALLEGANY 10, GALETON 0, 5 innings  

PORT ALLEGANY, Pa. – Jordan Seefeldt went 2-for-3 with triple, two RBIs and two runs scored to lead Port Allegany to a 10-0, five-inning win over visiting Galeton Wednesday.

Tre Garzel and Garrett Talkington combined on a two-hit shutout for the Gators.

Garzel went 3 ⅓ innings giving up one hit and one walk while striking out seven. Talkington then finished off going 1 ⅔ giving up a hit and striking out one.

Talkington and Garzel each added RBIs on offense with Garzel scoring twice and Talkington once. David Talkington also scored two runs for Port.

ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 3, JOHNSONBURG 1

ST. MARYS, Pa. – ECC erased a 1-0 lead after 3 ½ innings by scoring single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to claim a 3-1 win over visiting Johnsonburg Wednesday.

Brad Dippold had a big day at the plate for the Crusaders going 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot with a double. Ross Brennen and Alex Dattoli each had RBIs for ECC.

Brennen also picked up the win going five innings and allowing one run on one hit and four walks while striking out five.

Dattoli picked up the save finishing with two strong innings that saw him strike out three while giving up a hit and a walk.

Jeremy Breier had an RBI single for Johnsonburg, while Josh Raubenstrauch scored the Rams lone run while also drawing two walks.

Neil MacDonald took the loss going five innings and giving up three runs, all earned, on three hits and four walks while striking out two.

OSWAYO VALLEY 10, NORTHERN POTTER 0, 5 INNINGS

SHINGLEHOUSE, Pa. – Brandon Brabham had a solid game both on the mound and at the plate to help defending District 9 Class A champion Oswayo Valley to a season-opening 10-0 win over visiting Northern Potter in five innings Wednesday.

Brabham had a two-run single in the game also threw two innings of no-hit ball striking out three.

Garen Black also went two innings striking out six and not giving up a hit, while Gavin Babcock pitched one inning giving up a single to Willis Morgan and striking out one.  

DUBOIS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 15, KANE 0, 4 INNINGS

DUBOIS, Pa. – Behind a towering two-run home run by Jake Miknis, DuBois Central Catholic shutout visiting Kane, 15-0, in the season opener for both teams Wednesday at Showers Field in DuBois.

According to DCC head coach Andy Sayers, the Cardinals took advantage of walks and played really well in their first game.

“Thomas Grecco, Ty Bittner and Minkis all had solid game,” Sayers said.  

DUBOIS 8, BELLEFONTE 7

BELLEFONTE, Pa. – A five-run fourth inning and a three-run fifth helped DuBois escape Bellefonte with an 8-7 victory Wednesday.

Brayden Paulinellie and Michael Polohonki each drove in two runs for the Beavers, while Nick LaBrasca was 3-for-3 with a double and Adam Bankovich was 2-for-4 with a double. Brandon Simbeck, running for LaBrasca, scored twice as did Ryan Pasternik.

LaBrasca got the complete-game win. He allowed seven runs, four earned, on nine hits while striking out 10. He didn’t walk a batter.

Logan Mathieu was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs for Bellefonte, while Mark Armstrong was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

Bellefonte scored a run in the bottom of the seventh before LaBrasca shut the door.

REDBANK VALLEY 8, WEST SHAMOKIN 4

RURAL VALLEY, Pa. – Scott Toth clubbed a home run and a double to help lead Redbank Valley to an 8-4 road win over West Shamokin Wednesday.

Toth was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. He was one of four Bulldogs with multiple-hit games.

Nick Shoemaker was 2-for-3 with two walks, a run scored and a stolen base. Tanner Altobelli was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and two runs scored, and Devin Schimp was 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored an a stolen base. Connor Shoemaker added a double, a run scored and two RBIs.  

Grayson Harmon got the win in relief of Schimp going three inings and allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out five.

Xavier Julies had a pair of doubles for West Shamokin.

Devin Fairman took the loss for the Wolves giving up five runs, four earned, in four innings of work while striking out five.   

SOFTBALL

CLARION 10, CRANBERRY 8

CLARION, Pa. – A three-run fifth innings broke a seven-all tie and lifted Clarion to a 10-8 win over visiting Cranberry Wednesday afternoon.

The Lady Cats built a 5-0 lead after one inning thanks to three infield singles and four walks, but Cranberry scored twice in the second then five times in the third to take a 7-5 lead. The big hit in the third was a three-run home run by freshman Malliah Schreck, who was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored for the Lady Berries.

Clarion, though, tied the game in the bottom of the third before taking the lead for good in the fifth.

The Lady Cats won despite just five infield singles.

Maya Thornton was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Carly Best also scored a pair of runs. Keanna Over, Anna Reed, Sadie Rudesyle, Cora Zerfoss, Alexis Constantino and Best had RBIs for Clarion.

Another freshman, Andrea Watson, added a 2-for-3 performance with a double and run scored for Cranberry, while Libby Kiefer was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Constantino got the win for the Lady Cats going seven innings and allowing eight runs, four earned, on 10 hits and two walks while striking out three.

Natalie Barcinas took the loss in relief of Sarah Barcinas. Natalie went 5 ⅔ giving up five runs, two earned, on three hits and four walks while striking out seven. Sarah was wild giving up five runs on two hits and four walks in ⅓ of an inning.    

BROCKWAY 4, BROOKVILLE 0

BROCKWAY, Pa. – A four-run fifth inning helped Brockway topple visiting Brookville, 4-0, Wednesday afternoon.

The Lady Rovers had mustered just one hit through four innings while striking out five times against Brookville pitcher Carlie McManigle but got to the freshman for five hits in the fifth including RBI singles by Alayna Dowdall, Savannah Terwilliger and Anndi Bartlett. Kaitlyn Morelli also had an RBI groundout in the inning.   

Alayana Dowdall finished 2-for-2 with a run scored for Brockway.

Brookville had three hits, all singles, by Hannah Kirkwood, Maggie Miller and Elliette Park.

COUDERSPORT 7, SMETHPORT 1

SMETHPORT, Pa. – Joplin Osgood, Macy Gleason and EmmaRae Easton each had two hits, as Coudersport evened its record at 1-1 with a 7-1 victory at Smethport Wednesday.

Gleason and Easton were both 2-for-4 with doubles, while Osgood was 2-for-4. Shaelyn Black also went 1-for-3 with a double for the Lady Falcons.

Easton also threw a one-hit gem giving up on run while striking out three and walking three.

Kiara Orner had the hit for Smethport.  

Brook Kane Walker took the loss for the Lady Hubbers.

DUBOIS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 15, KANE 0, 5 INNINGS

KANE, Pa. – Riley Assalone tossed a five-inning no hitter facing just one batter over the minimum, as DuBois Central Catholic rolled to a 15-0, five-inning win at Kane.

Assalone hit the first batter she faced and then retired the final 15, including 12 by strikeouts.

The Lady Cardinals had 16 hits including a 4-for-4 performance from Macey Hanes and a 3-for-4 day by Jordy Frank.

JOHNSONBURG 12, ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 2, 5 INNINGS

JOHNSONBURG, Pa. – Jaylie Johnson and Hannah Park each had two hits and three RBIs to lead Johnsonburg to a 12-2, five-inning win over defending state champion Elk County Catholic Wednesday.

Park was also solid in the circle going five innings allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits and a walk while striking out five.

Jenna Labant had two of the hits for the Lady Crusaders, going 2-for-2.

MONITEAU 15, CROSS LANES (W. Va.) 0, 5 INNINGS

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Moniteau continued to roll on its trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. blowing out Cross Lanes (W. Va.), 15-0, at the Cal Ripken Experience Wednesday.

Sara Hull hit a solo home run and added two singles, three runs scored and two RBIs to pace the Lady Warriors, who also got a double, a single and two RBIs from Megan Hepler, a double, a run scored and two RBIs from Kennedy DeMatteis, a double, a single, an RBI and three runs scored from Kristina DeMatteis, a single, a double, two runs scored and three RBIs from Cortney Claypoole and two singles and three runs scored from Gabby Stewart.

Kennedy DeMatteis got the win striking out four.

NORTHERN POTTER 1, OSWAYO VALLEY 0

SHINGLEHOUSE, Pa. – Briana Black threw a three-hit shutout while striking out 11 and walking just two, and visiting Northern Potter scored the game’s only run on a passed ball to beat Oswayo Valley, 1-0, Wednesday.

Jenna Hyde, who walked, scored the game’s lone run on the passed ball for the Lady Panthers.

Tory McCutcheon led Northern Potter going 2-for-2 with a walk, while Mikayla Lewis was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Hope Howard led Oswayo going 2-for-3.

Madison Nudd was nearly Black’s equal in the circle giving up just the one unearned run on three hits and five walks while striking out 13.  

GALETON 16, PORT ALLEGANY 2

PORT ALLEGANY, Pa. – A nine-run seventh inning helped Galeton blowout Port Allegany, 16-2, Wednesday afternoon in Port Allegany.

The Lady Tigers grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first and tacked on a run in the fourth and three more in the sixth to go up 7-0 before Port Allegany got a run back in the bottom of the sixth.

Olivia Pagano paced Galeton at the plate going 3-for-4 with four runs scored. Makayla Shadle and Regan Fuller each added a pair of hits with Shadle doubling, driving home two and scoring twice. Ashley Cizek also had two RBIs and two runs scored.

Autumn Freer, Hannah Lathrop and Lynzie Turner all had hits for Port Allegany with Lathrop and Turner scoring runs. Lathrop’s knock was a triple.

Shadle got the win for Galeton going seven innings and giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits and 10 walks while striking out 17.

FREEPORT 7, REDBANK VALLEY 2

NEW BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Claire Crytzer hit a two-run home runs, and Ashleigh Schmplt and Becca Fennel each had two hits to lead Freeport to a 7-2 win at Redbank Valley in non-conference action Wednesday.

One of Schmplt’s hits was a double, while Fennell scored two runs.

Kimberly Shick had a pair of singles and two RBIs for Redbank Valley, while MacKenzie Pence also had two hits for the Lady Bulldogs.

Kristie Raduan got the win for Freeport giving up two runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three.

Alyssa Burkett took the loss for Redbank Valley giving up seven runs but only two earned. She did strike out six.
