BROCKWAY, Pa. – Riley Assalone threw a one-hitter and also scored the first run of a four-run sixth-inning rally for top-seeded DuBois Central Catholic, which rallied past upset-minded A-C Valley to a 4-1 win the District 9 Class A semifinals at Brockway.
Fifth-seeded A-C Valley (11-8) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth when Lauren McNany walked, went all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by Sydney Rankin and scored when the throw to third was overthrown.
But Assalone, who hasn’t allowed an earned run in 53 straight innings now and struck out seven while walking three, quickly picked up her teammates with a double leading off the bottom of the sixth. Four more hits followed by the Lady Cardinals (21-0) to give them the lead.
Halee Wetzel had the only hit for A-C Valley.
DCC is back in the title game for the first time since winning the 2014 championship. The Cardinals will face Clarion in the title game at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Brockway.
