Q&A With Shayleigh Gulvas

D9Sports: What is your favorite sport to participate in?
SG: Softball, I think I do the best in that sport.

D9: What is your favorite memory, moment, game from playing high school sports?
SG: My favorite memory was when I hit my first ever home run against Elk County this season. Hitting my second home run in the district championship game is a close second.

D9: Why do you play high school sports?
SG: I like to play sports because I learn a lot about my teammates and we all become closer friends while playing. We teach and support each other while playing. Playing sports also keeps me in shape and makes me better. I also like meeting new friends through the other schools we play.

D9: Is there a high school player on your team or another team that you enjoy watching play? If so, why?
SG: I enjoyed watching and playing with the seniors this year at DCC. Jordy (Frank), Riley (Assalone), Macey (Hanes) and Libby (Maurer) taught me a lot as a freshman. Watching them helped me improve on and off the field. I hope to keep watching Jordy and Riley when they play this coming year in college.

D9: When not playing sports I would rather (pick one) – Go to work, play video games, shop, hang out with friends, play pickup sports, go the movies
SG: Hang out with friends, shopping, traveling and watching my favorite show, The Walking Dead!

D9: If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
SG: Paris, it looks like a really pretty place and there is so much to see and do there.

D9: Who has had the most influence on you as a person?
SG: My dad has had the most influence on me as a person. He taught me how to play sports, to do well in school, and make sure that I am friends with everybody. He helps push me to be the best I can be. He never gives up on me and that teaches me to not give up on myself either.

D9: What do you like most about growing up in your hometown?
SG: It’s small and I know a lot of people. There is a lot to do here without having to live in a big city. I have friends from both my school and the public school.

D9: What do you wish you could change about growing up in your hometown?
SG: I really wouldn’t change anything about my hometown, it would have been nice to have more neighbors growing up to play with though!

D9: What question do you wish I would have asked you? And what is the answer to it?
SG: What is your goal for next softball season? Answer: To win the district title and try to hit at least four home runs, that’s double what I did this year.

D9: Do you or have you had any siblings or other immediate relatives who have played high school sports?
SG: Yes, my sisters Michelyn (who is an assistant coach on the DCC softball team) & Lauresa played basketball and softball. My brother Kelcey played baseball and basketball. My mom played volleyball in high school and my dad played baseball and basketball. He also continued playing basketball at Penn State DuBois. I have many cousins that have played sports as well.
