CLARION, Pa. – Haley Scherer’s breakaway goal in the second half broke a one-all tie and gave District 9 champion Karns City a 2-1 win over WPIAL runner-up Freedom in the opening round of the PIAA Class 2A playoffs at Clarion University’s Memorial Stadium.

Karns City took a 1-0 lead before halftime on penalty kick goal from Hannah Knoll, but Freedom responded with an Alexsia Barlamas tally to tie the game at one at halftime.
The Lady Gremlins will take on District 10 champion Mercyhurst Prep, a 1-0 winner in double overtime over Central-Martinsburg.
MARS 7, DUBOIS 0
HYDE, Pa. – Despite a goal from Maddison King, DuBois dropped a 7-1 decision to WPIAL runner-up Mars in the opening round of the PIAA Class 3A girls’ soccer playoffs at Clearfield High School.
The District 9 champion Lady Beavers trailed 7-0 at halftime.
Maggie Williams had a pair of goals to pace Mars, while Caroline Wroblewski, Megan Zukowski, Taylor Hamlett, Ellie Coffield and Kaitlyn Pietrusinski also scored for the winners.
CARDINAL WUERL NORTH CATHOLIC 2, RIDGWAY 0
BROCKWAY, Pa. – WPIAL third-place finisher Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic shutout District 9 champion Ridgway, 2-0, at Brockway’s Varischetti Field in the opening round of the PIAA Class 1A playoffs.
Ella Biedler and Julia Bukowski scored for the Trojanettes.
GREENSBURG CENTRAL CATHOLIC 3, BROCKWAY 2
CORAOPOLIS, Pa. – Sydney Ward’s goal 22 seconds after Leah Lindemuth’s game-tying goal lifted WPIAL champion Greensburg Central Catholic to a 3-2 win over District 9 runner-up Brockway in the PIAA Class 1A first round at Moon High School.
Chanell Britton also scored for Brockway with her tally tying the game at one.
Ward had given GCC an early 1-0 lead 90 seconds into the match.
