Dec. 8, 2017 Knox Country Farm Supply Boys’ Basketball Roundup: Four Games Decided by 2 or Fewer Points

Four games decided by two or fewer points highlighted the opening night of the District 9 boys’ basketball season.

Two of those games were decided by a single point with DuBois getting a buzzer-beater to top Clarion, 58-57, and Port Allegany beating Sheffield, 51-50, while Mercer beat Redbank Valley, 48-46, and Clearfield topped Curwensville, 52-50.

DUBOIS 58, CLARION 57

KNOX, Pa. – Sophomore Chase Husted hit a short jumper just before the buzzer to give DuBois the 58-57 win over Clarion in the Keystone Tip-Off Tournament.

Clarion had taken a 57-56 lead with 11.1 seconds left on Josh Craig’s lone basket of the game, but Husted was left wide open on the right side of the basket for the game-winner following a DuBois timeout with 4.9 seconds left.

The sophomore Husted had 16 points and 10 rebound for DuBois, while Justin Manduley led the Beavers, who survived turning the ball over 33 times, with 20 points.

Husted talked about his game-winning shot and the game itself.

Austin Hummell had a big game for Clarion with 28 points, including 24 in the second half, and eight rebounds.

The Bobcats trailed, 51-43, with three minutes left but went on a 10-1 run to take the lead on Hummell basket with 1:32 left.

Husted and Hummell then exchanged baskets to put Clarion up one, 55-54, with 29.8 to go before Kenny Garvey hit two free throws with 21.3 to play to give DuBois the lead back prior to Josh Craig’s go-ahead basket for Clarion.

PORT ALLEGANY 51, SHEFFIELD 50

SHEFFIELD, Pa. – Howard Stuckey scored 27 points, as Port Allegany held off Sheffield, 51-50, in the Sheffield Sports Boosters Tip-Off Tournament.

The Gators led 43-35 going to the fourth quarter before the home squad made a run.

Cale Albaugh led Sheffield with 16 points with Matt Dunham adding 12.

CLEARFIELD 54, CURWENSVILLE 52

HYDE, Pa. – Clearfield built a 36-22 halftime lead then had to fend off a second-half charge by visiting Curwensville to escape with the 54-52 win.

The Golden Tide’s big push came in the third quarter when they outscored the Bison, 21-10, to get within three, 46-43, going to the fourth.

Cade Walker (12 points, 13 rebounds) and Reese Wilson (12 points, 10 rebounds) each had double-doubles for Clearfield with Jon Gates adding 11 points.

Josh Terry led all scorers with 27 points for Curwensville and Christian Bakaysa chipped in 11 points.

MERCER 48, REDBANK VALLEY 46

NEW BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Josh Bretz scored 19 points and James Amon scored 12 to lead Mercer to a 48-46 win over Redbank Valley in the Redbank Valley Tip-Off Tournament.

Nick Smith had 21 points to lead Redbank Valley.

BRADFORD 59, WEST SHAMOKIN 38

NEW BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Deondre Terwilliger had 22 points to lead Bradford to a 59-38 win over West Shamokin in the Redbank Valley Tip-Off Tournament.

Tyler Gigliotti added 17 points in the win for the Owls.

ST. MARYS 51, KEYSTONE 44

KNOX, Pa. – St. Marys raced out to a 17-4 lead and then held off a second-half comeback by Keystone to oust the Panthers, 51-44, in the opening round of the Keystone Tip-Off Tournament.

Keystone got back within three, 45-42, midway through the fourth quarter but couldn’t get any closer.

Nathan Schneider had a monster day with 28 points, including 21 in the first half, for the Dutch, while Corey Rapp led Keystone with 22 points.

NORTH CLARION 62, JAMESTOWN 44

SHEFFIELD, Pa. – Behind 26 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots from Nathan Banner, North Clarion rolled to a 62-44 win over Jamestown in the Sheffield Sports Boosters Tip-Off Tournament.

Keeven Weaver added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Wolves.

KARNS CITY 60, SAEGERTOWN 41

FOXBURG, Pa. – Chase Beighley had 16 points and five assists to help Karns City to a 60-41 win over Saegertown in the A-C Valley Hoops for Heroes Classic.

Jacob Friel and Austin Fahlor each added 12 points for the Gremlins, while Nolan Riley had seven points and eight rebounds.

PURCHASE LINE 81, A-C VALLEY 60

FOXBURG, Pa. – Despite a career-high 18 points to go with five rebounds, four assists and four steals from sophomore Eddie Stevanus, A-C Valley dropped an 81-60 decision to Purchase Line in the A-C Valley Hoops for Heroes Classic.

Brendan Price added nine points and six rebounds for the Falcons who also got eight points from Dalton Callander and seven from Carson Snyder.

SMETHPORT 62, SOUTHWESTERN (N.Y.) 39

ALLEGANY, N.Y. – Caleb Lutz netted 22 points to help lift Smethport to a 62-39 win over Southwestern (N.Y.) in the Shootout at the Swamp at Allegany-Limestone (N.Y.).

Conner Alfieri added 14 points in the win for the Hubbers.

BROOKVILLE 34, MONITEAU 20

BROOKVILLE, Pa. – In a low-scoring affair, Brookville blanked visiting Moniteau over the final 10:22 to pull away for a 34-29 win in the opening game of the Brookville Tip-Off Tournament.

A.J. Lachnicht scored nine points to lead the Raiders, who meet Brockway in Saturday’s championship game at 7:30 p.m.

Moniteau had the lone double-figure scorer in the game as Ethan McDeavitt finished with 10 points.

The Raiders, who started the game with an 8-0 lead, owned a 17-14 advantage at halftime and after Moniteau cut their lead to 25-20 with 2:22 left in the third quarter, the Raiders held them scoreless the rest of the game.

BROCKWAY 67, UNION 39

BROOKVILLE, Pa. – Carter Adams scored 29 points as Brockway jumped on Union early and often for a 67-39 win in the opening round of the Brookville Tip-Off Tournament.

The Rovers, the defending tournament champions, led 18-3 after the first quarter and 21-3 after Adams’ 3-pointer at the 6:27 mark of the second quarter. While Adams scored just four points the first eight minutes, he sparked the Rovers the rest of the way. Adams scored 11 points in the second quarter alone, making three 3-pointers. He finished 10-of-16 from the floor with six rebounds.

Noah Vokes added 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting to go along with five rebounds for the Rovers, who led 36-15 by halftime and by as many as 31 points twice in the fourth quarter.

Lucas Bowser led Union with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Luke Bowser scored 10 points.

OSWAYO VALLEY 69, BUCKTAIL 62

WESTFIELD, Pa. – Theo Henry exploded for 27 points to help Oswayo Valley to a 69-62 win over Bucktail in the Jack Bush Tournament at Cowanesque Valley.

Gavin Babcock added 19 points in the win for the Green Wave.

COWANESQUE VALLEY 63, NORTHERN POTTER 18

WESTFIELD, Pa. – Skyler Vinluan had 21 points to help Cowanesque Valley to a 63-18 win over Northern Potter in the Jack Bush Tournament at Cowanesque Valley.

Holden Cowburn led Northern Potter with five tallies.

PUNXSUTAWNEY 59, MARION CENTER 51

DUBOIS, Pa. – Brandon Matthews had 22 points and 16 rebounds to lift Punxsutawney to a 59-51 win over Marion Center in the DuBois Central Catholic Tip-Off Tournament.

Ethan Blose also reached double digits for the Chucks with 12 points.

JOHNSONBURG 57, DUBOIS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 41

DUBOIS, Pa. – Tyler Singer and Dilen Surra each had 11 points to lead a balanced Johnsonburg attack in a 57-41 win over DuBois Central Catholic in the DuBois Central Catholic Tip-Off Tournament.

Justin Miknis led all scorers with 21 points for DCC while adding 11 rebounds.

CLARION-LIMESTONE 44, SLIPPERY ROCK 37

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Ian Callen and Christian Smith combined for 26 points to help Clarion-Limestone to a 44-37 win over Slippery Rock in the Kiser Classic at Grove City.

Callen led the Lions with 15 points with Smith chipping in 11.

COCHRANTON 82, CRANBERRY 32

FRANKLIN, Pa. – Alex McKay and Kohl Bernarding each scored 19 points to help Cochranton to an 82-32 win over Cranberry in the Roy Sanner Tournament at Rocky Grove.

Matt McQuaide led Cranberry with 10 points.

ROCKY GROVE 80, VENANGO CATHOLIC 32

FRANKLIN, Pa. – Conner Curran’s 18 points led a foursome of Rocky Grove players in double digits, as the Orioles rolled to an 80-32 win over Venango Catholic in the Roy Sanner Tournament at the Grove.

Travis Perry and Hunter Bruner each added 12 points for Rocky Grove with Scott Perry chipping in 10 points.

Josh Puleo’s 17 points led Venango Catholic with Ben Gillispie adding 10 points.
