Cranberry Collects 16 Hits in Softball Victory Over Clarion-Limestone; Knapp Homers for Lions

STRATTANVILLE, Pa. (EYT/D9)— Cassie Scarbrough collected four of the Cranberry softball team’s 16 hits, including a double and a pair of RBIs, as the Berries defeated Clarion-Limestone, 16-2, in five innings on Wednesday afternoon.

Winning pitcher Reyna Watson, Keelie Schneider, Kylie Coe, and Jayda Shumaker each collected two hits. Watson and Coe each drove in two runs.

Lexi Reisinger, Coe, and Maddie Wagner each hit a double for Cranberry.

Watson tossed five innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits. She walked two and struck out six.

Clarion-Limestone had freshman Kaylee Smith in the circle as their ace, Jenna Dunn, was being rested as she had a heavy workload last week in the Lions wins over Clarion and Moniteau.

“Jenna threw a lot of pitches last week and as a precaution we decided to go with Kaylee in the circle today,” said C-L coach Jason Craig. “We only have one game this week so that will give Jenna more time to be rested and ready for next week.”

Cranberry scored four runs each in the first and second innings. They would add six in the fourth and two in the fifth.

C-L (2-4 overall) would score one in the third as Abby Knapp hit a home run over the center field fence. Dunn would score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning to account for the second run.

Dunn and Alyssa Wiant each had two hits with Knapp accounting for the other C-L hit.

Smith allowed 16 runs, nine earned on 16 hits in five innings. She walked five and struck out three.

“For her first varsity start, I felt Kaylee did a decent job,” said Craig. “Cranberry is a good hitting team and they were hitting the ball hard and when they weren’t hitting it hard, they were still finding their way down for hits and that’s how things go sometimes. Meanwhile we were hitting the ball right at people although we picked up a few hits over the last couple of innings, so the girls never gave up and kept battling.”
