April 3, 2017 Baseball Roundup: St. Marys Gets Shutout, Brookville, Clarion Get Close Wins

ST. MARYS 4, BRADFORD 0

ST. MARYS, Pa. – Nate Beimel and Jared Groll combined on a six-hit shutout, as St. Marys beat visiting Bradford, 4-0.

Beimel went the first five innings giving up two hits and three walks while striking out 13 to get the win.

Groll came into the game in the sixth with the Dutch leading 3-0 and picked up the save going two innings and allowing four hits while striking out one.

Tim Beimel and Michael Beimel each had a pair of hits for St. Marys both going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Nate Beimel, Jeff Wehler and Hayden Tettis each had RBIs.

Danny Manion was 2-for-3 for Bradford. He was also the losing pitcher going 4 ⅔ innings allowing three unearned runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out seven.

BROCKWAY 11, KANE 6

KANE, Pa. – Hunter Antonuccio and Erik Botwright both drove home three runs to pace an 11-6 win for visiting Brockway over Kane.

Antonuccio was 3-for-4 with a walk and a double while scoring twice, while Botwright went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Jarrett Esposito was also 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored with Tyler Serafini going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, a run scored and an RBI.

Serafini had two stints on the mound going the first four innings and then coming back in with two outs and five Kane runs across in the fifth. His final line was 6 ⅓ innings of work, one run on six hits. He struck out eight. Antonuccio threw ⅔ of an inning giving up five runs on two hits and four walks while striking out two.

Connor Crowley was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs to lead Kane.

BROOKVILLE 2, REDBANK VALLEY 1

BROOKVILLE, Pa. – Ben Reitz and Aaron Park combined on a two-hitter to lead Brookville to a 2-1 win over visiting Redbank Valley.

Reitz, who retired 10 of the final 11 he faced with the lone base runner he gave up in that stretch being erased on a double play, allowed a second-inning run. He gave up two hits and walked three while striking out six. Park then came into the game in the sixth and picked up a two-inning save. The freshman walked two and struck out three.

Brady Caylor was 2-for-2 to lead the Raiders offense, while Park drove in the game-winning run on a double in the third. Brookville scored both of its runs in the third tying the game when Seth Dunkle reached on an error allowing Bryan Dworek, who reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second, to score.

Bryan Layton took the loss for Redbank Valley going six innings and allowing two runs, neither earned on four hits and a walk. He struck out eight

Nick Smith had the Bulldogs RBI.

DUBOIS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 5, JOHNSONBURG 2

JOHNSONBURG, Pa. – Jack Frank had a double and two RBIs, and Thomas Grecco threw five no-hit innings, as visiting DuBois Central Catholic beat Johnsonburg, 5-2.

Tyler McIntosh added a hit and two runs scored for the Cardinals, while Justin Miknis was 1-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored and Brandon Walker was 1-for-4 with a double.

The story was Grecco, though, who needed 90 pitches to get through five hitless innings. He walked five and struck out 10.

Johnsonburg touched up reliever Michael Misiewicz for two runs on four hits and a walk with both runs coming in the bottom of the seventh.

DCC led 2-0 going to the seventh but tacked on three very important insurance runs in the seventh.

Justin Kasmierski was the tough-luck loser going five innings and allowing two unearned runs on two hits while striking out two. Ben Ames was tagged for three runs on four hits while striking out two in one inning of work.

Neil MacDonald had a two-run single for the Rams.

OTTO-ELDRED 10, NORTHERN POTTER 0, 5 INNINGS

DUKE CENTER, Pa. – Bryce Gold drove in three runs and Chris Connelly was 2-for-3 with a triple to lead Otto-Eldred to a 10-0, five-inning win over visiting Northern Potter.

Sawyer Drummond got the win going 2 ⅔ innings and allowing one hit while striking out four.

Tucker Kosa took the loss allowing four hits and four walks with two strikeouts in 4 ⅓ innings of work.

ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 6, CURWENSVILLE 2

CURWENSVILLE, Pa. – Ryan Heary drove in a pair of runs to help Elk County Catholic to a 6-2 road victory over Curwensville.

Heary was 1-for-3 with a walk and had the lone RBIs for the Crusaders, who took advantage of four Curwensville errors to score the other four runs.

Brad Dippold scored twice for ECC, while Alec Wehler was 2-for-2 with a run scored.

Gabe Kraus got the win going four innings and allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four. Dippold picked up the save throwing three scoreless innings. He gave up four walks but no hits and struck out three.

Bryce Timko had a double and two RBIs for Curwensville, while Noah Vongunden was 2-for-5.

Timko took the loss going four innings and allowing three runs, one earned, on two hits and three walks while striking out eight.

CLARION 2, FRANKLIN 1, 8 INNINGS

FRANKLIN, Pa. – Dominic Fleming drew a bases-loaded two-out walk in the top of the eighth inning to give visiting Clarion a 2-1 win over Franklin.

Fleming’s walk was the fourth of the inning for the Bobcats.

Cam Craig got the rally started with a one-out walk. He stole second with two outs before Sterling Conner walked. Craig then stole third and Conner second before Skyler Rhoades walked to load the bases. Fleming then took three straight balls before the count went to 3-and-2 and he walked in the go-ahead run off Connor Radkow.

The Knights tried to rally in the bottom of the eighth and had the bases loaded with nobody out following a single by Radkow and back-to-back walks to Trey Weaver and Zach Baughman.

But Reed Anthony struck out back-to-back batters and then got Vinny Greco to groundout back to the mound to end the game on the 14th pitch of the at-bat. Greco fouled off seven straight full-count pitches.

Anthony got the win going two scoreless innings. He allowed one hit and three walks while striking out three.

Ryan Anthony also threw three scoreless innings of relief for Clarion. He walked one but didn’t allow a hit.

Franklin grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second when Weaver, who was 2-for-3 with a walk, scored before Clarion tied the game in the fifth with Kyle Patterson crossing the plate.

Clarion showed great plate discipline walking 11 times paced by three from Spencer Miller and two each from Conner and Rhoades.

HOLLIDAYSBURG 4, PUNXSUTAWNEY 1

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – Sam and John Servello threw a combined no-hitter, as visiting Hollidaysburg beat Punxsutawney, 4-1.

Sam Servello started and went four innings allowing one earned run. He walked six and struck out five but didn’t allow a hit in getting the win. John Servello then tossed three hitless innings striking out four to get the save.

John Servello also had a pair of RBIs for the Tigers going 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored. He hit a two-run home run in the fifth.

Lucas Burkett and Logan Johnston each drew two walks for the Chucks. Tyler Richardson scored the run.

Johnston, one of four Punxsy pitchers, took the loss. The starter went two innings allowing one run on one hit and one walk while striking out two.

Isaac Stouffer, who pitched the sixth and seventh, was the most effective Chuck hurler going two scoreless innings striking out four while allowing a hit.

COUDERSPORT 14, SMETHPORT 4, 6 INNINGS

COUDERSPORT, Pa. – Eli Ayers drove in four runs to pace a 14-4, six-inning win for Coudersport over visiting Smethport.

Ayers was 2-for-5 with two runs scored for the Falcons, who also got two RBIs each from Kullen Crosby, Elliott Hite and Hunter Redman and two from Elliot Hite.

Crosby was 1-for-4 with a double and two runs scored with Hite going 1-for-3 and Redman 2-for-3. Aaron Wolfinger was also 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Owen Chambers was 1-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Orion Alexis had a pair of RBIs for Smethport.

Blake Burgett got the win in relief going 3 1/3 innings and allowing two hits and two walks while striking out three.
