(EYT/D9) — Thomas Uckert, Wyatt Boyden, and Dany Schweitzer scored Clarion-Limestone goals in building a 3-1 lead before having to withstand a furious Brockway comeback attempt as the Lions defeated the Rovers 3-2 in the opening round District 9 Class A boys soccer playoffs at Larry Wiser field on Tuesday afternoon.

“That was a huge goal for us to answer that quickly after they had tied it,” said C-L head coach Don Montgomery. “They had some confidence after tying the game and then for us to score that quickly it put the momentum back on our side. That was just a huge goal for us.”

Ten minutes later, Dany Schweitzer scored on a thru ball when he was able to beat Brockway goalkeeper Landon Moyer to the ball and get the ball past the diving Moyer to put the ball in the back of the goal for a 3-1 lead with 23:38 to play.

From there the Lions tried to protect the lead while continuing to attack when the chances were there, but Moyer was tough to beat, making several key saves.

Caleb Daugherty scored on a great individual effort for Brockway with 3:31 to play to cut the lead to 3-2.

However, the Lions were able to withstand the charging Rovers down the stretch to hold on for the win.

“We practice ball control all the time in practice,” said Montgomery. “These guys know to keep the play simple when we are protecting the lead and today was a good example of that as we were able to possess the ball when we needed to especially down the stretch.”

C-L held a 13-6 advantage in shots for the game with Moyer making 10 saves while Isaac Lerch made four saves.

“We know we’ll face a familiar opponent on Thursday and we’ll be ready to go no matter who they put in front of us,” said Montgomery.
