INDIANA, Pa. – Needing just one set victory to move into the PIAA Class A championship game for the third time in four years, the Clarion girls’ volleyball team was stunned by WPIAL champion Greensburg Central Catholic 3-2 Tuesday night at Indiana High School.
The District 9 champion Lady Cats came out strong jumping on the Centurions in the first two sets winning by scores of 25-23 and 25-17.
But what looked like an easy path to the state title game for the 2012 champions turned out to be anything but.
GCC rallied to stay in the match with a 25-20 third-set victory then squeaked out a 25-23 win in the fourth set to set up a winner-take-all fifth set with a trip to the state-title game on the line.
And while Clarion fought hard, in the end the Centurions came out on top with a 15-12 victory.
The loss ended Clarion’s season at 18-4 ad broke an eight-match win streak.
