Curwensville Second as a Team, 19 Individual Move on to Central Regional Following Performances at District 5/6/9 Girl Individual Wrestling Tournament

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (EYT/D9) — Nineteen area wrestlers placed sixth or higher at the District 5/6/9 Girls Individual Wrestling Tournament held Saturday on the campus of University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown (Feb. 24), advancing to the upcoming Central Girls Regional Championships.

The top six wrestlers in each weight class were awarded spots at regionals.

Leading the District 9 contingent was Punxsutawney’s Jael Miller, the Chucks’ grappler capturing first place in the 170-pound weight class.

Though Miller was the only Punxsutawney wrestler competing, her placement allowed the Chucks (24 points) to tie for 17th out of the 23 teams in attendance.

Curwensville had a district-high nine competitors advance to regionals.

The Golden Tide’s Savannah Carfley and Gabrielle Bumbarger both finished as runner-ups, taking second at 124 and 148 pounds, respectively.

Five other Curwensville wrestlers took fourth – Skylar Turner (118 pounds), Tessa Queen (142 pounds), Savannah Harley (155 pounds), Emily Neeper (190 pounds), and Taylor Shirey (235 pounds).

Matilyn McCracken was fifth at 130 pounds and Jordin Peoples sixth at 106 pounds for the Golden Tide.

Curwensville’s overall performance was such that the squad placed second overall, its 97 points 24 behind team champion Bishop McCort (121 points).

Redbank Valley had five earn a trip to regionals, led by Emma Taladay in second place at 100 pounds.

Placing third for the Bulldogs was Keyauna Schimp (190 pounds).

Three Redbank Valley grapplers secured sixth place finishes – 112-pounder Riley Kerchinski, 148- pounder Natalie Troup, and 170-pounder Makenna Monrean.

The Bulldogs (51 points) came in ninth as a team.

Bradford and Clearfield each had a pair of wrestlers place in the top-six.

Both Lilianna Rodrguez (136 pounds) and Shelby Shirley (142 pounds) were victorious in the consolation semifinals, securing third-place finishes for the Owls.

The Bison’s Aylee Johnston came in third at 170 pounds. Teammate Alara Quickel (136 pounds) was sixth.

Bradford (41 points) came in 12th as a team, while Clearfield (24 points) tied for 17th with Punxsutawney and Moshannon Valley.

The Central Girls Regional wrestling tournament is slated for Saturday, March 2 at Milton High School.
