D9 1A Volleyball Quarterfinal Recaps: ECC, Clarion, ACV, Coudy Advance to Semifinals

(1) ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 3, (8) SMETHPORT 0

ST. MARYS, Pa. – Behind 19 kills from Cassidy Cunningham, top-seeded Elk County Catholic advanced to the District 9 Class 1A semifinals with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-21) win over visiting and eight-seeded Smethport.

Taylor Newton added eight kills for the Lady Crusaders (15-0), who will play Coudersport in the semifinals at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Marys – the consolation and championship matches are also at St. Marys Saturday at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. respectively.

Reilly Herzing also had seven kills for ECC, while Kara Detsch ran the offense with 31 set assists.

(2) CLARION 3, (10) JOHNSONBURG 0

CLARION, Pa. – Clarion started quickly and never looked back in getting a 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-21) win over visiting Johnsonburg in the D9 Class 1A quarterfinals.

The second-seeded Lady Cats (13-1) didn’t even trail in any set until the third set against the 10th-seeded Ramettes (9-9), who upset Cranberry in the first round to reach Thursday’s quarterfinal round.

Olivia Burns led Clarion with 16 kills while adding five digs. Lexi Lauer chipped in eight kills, eight digs and an ace, Sydney Kiser added five kills and eight digs and Hailey Sintobin had six kills.

Gloria Kroh ran the Lady Cats attack with 26 set assists and added six digs, five kills and two aces with Alexis Constantino pacing the defense with 12 digs.

Skylar Sherry led Johnsonburg with six kills and seven digs. Nicole Myers added six kills and three digs with Jenson Furlong chipping in five kills and Rylie Casilio seven set assists.

Brianna Quiggle led the defensive effort for Johnsonburg with 13 digs.

Clarion will face A-C Valley in the semifinals 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Marys – the consolation and championship matches are also at St. Marys Saturday at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. respectively.

(3) A-C VALLEY 3, (6) NORTH CLARION 0

FOXBURG, Pa. – Josey Terwilliger and Olivia Boocks combined for 29 kills to give third-seeded A-C Valley a 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-11) win over visiting North Clarion, the sixth seed in the D9 Class 1A quarterfinals.

Terwilliger led the way for the Lady Falcons (15-1) with 18 kills with Boocks adding 11 kills. Terwilliger also had nine digs and two blocks with Boocks chipping in with six digs and a block.

Kylee Eaton, who served well all night, added eight kills, three aces and three digs.

The two-setter system of Sydney Rankin (15 set assists) and Kaylie Merwin (12 set assists) ran the show for A-C Valley with Cassie Schwalm adding seven digs.

Cassie Wagner paced North Clarion (12-4) with six kills and four blocks, but A-C Valley held Tori Obenrader to four kills and five blocks. Abby Karg had 18 digs with Mackenzie Bauer chipping in seven digs.

A-C Valley gets a rematch with Clarion, who handed the Lady Falcons their only loss, in the semifinals at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Marys – the consolation and championship matches are also at St. Marys Saturday at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. respectively. The match is a rematch of last year’s epic D9 title game won by Clarion, 3-2.

(5) COUDERSPORT 3, (4) OTTO-ELDRED 1

DUKE CENTER, Pa. – In front of a standing-room-only crowd at Otto-Eldred, the third time proved to be the charm for visiting and fifth-seeded Coudersport which knocked off fourth-seeded Otto-Eldred, 3-1 (25-17, 35-33, 19-25, 25-22), in the D9 Class 1A quarterfinals.

The second set turned out to be the difference maker, as Otto, down one set to none, led 23-20 but watched as Coudersport rallied to win what turned out to be an epic 35-33 victory.

Ally Easton had 11 kills and four blocks to lead the way for Coudersport (18-2), which lost both regular-season meetings to the Lady Terrors (19-3). Kiara Perkins added 12 kills with Skyler Vanwagenen chipping in five kills and two aces, EmmaRae Easton six kills and three blocks and Macy Gleason three kills and a block that ended the match.

Joplin Osgood had a monster game on defense with 50 digs, while Ady Page and Emma Powell each added 18 digs.

Haley Keck ran the Coudersport attack with 33 set assists.

Camryn Thomas had a kills/digs double-double to pace Otto finishing with 17 kills and 12 digs while also adding eight blocks.

Ali Cousins chipped in 12 kills and eight digs for the Lady Terrors with Tiffany Bair adding 10 kills, seven blocks and five aces.

Emily Smith had an assists/digs double-double with 42 set assists and 14 digs.

Coudersport will take on top-seeded ECC in the semifinals at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Marys – the consolation and championship matches are also at St. Marys Saturday at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. respectively.
