SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – West Greene’s strong offensive effort ended DuBois Central Catholic’s playoff run, as the Pioneers topped the Cardinals 12-1.
West Greene had 13 hits in the win, with London Whipkey tallying three hits to lead the Pioneers. Kiley Meek and Olivia Kiger each had two hits and three RBI for West Greene, with Jersey Wise and Maddie Mcclure each contributing multi-hit efforts. Wise was in top form in the circle, holding DCC to six hits in seven innings, striking out four. Chelsea Busatto and Madison Hoyt had a pair of hits apiece for the Cardinals. Morgan Tyler took the loss in the circle for DCC.
After escaping a jam in the top of the first, DCC scored a run in the bottom of the inning to take a 1-0 lead. After Kaylee Risser walked to start off the inning and stole second, Mia Meholick smacked an RBI double to left-center field to give the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead. West Greene surged ahead in the third, scoring three runs after an hour-long, mid-inning lightning delay. Meek drove in the first run of the frame on a groundout, and a Kiger double gave the Pioneers a 3-1 lead in the third.
West Greene increased their lead in the fifth, scoring three more runs to hold a 6-1 advantage. With runners on second and third with one out, a Mcclure squeeze bunt brought in the first run of the inning, with Mcclure advancing to second base on the play after catching DCC napping on defense. A Taylor Karvan single scored the final two runs of the inning, driving in Meek and Mcclure to give the Pioneers a 6-1 advantage. The Pioneers added a pair in the sixth, with Meek and Kiger each notching RBI singles in the frame to increase West Greene’s lead to 8-1.
The Pioneers scored four more runs in the seventh to set the 12-1 final score.
