REDBANK VALLEY 57, UNION 52
RIMERSBURG, Pa. – Redbank Valley built an 18-point second-half lead but then had to hold on for dear life to beat Union 57-52 on Don Stemmerich night at Union Friday.
The Bulldogs led 40-22 early in the third quarter and still held a 16-points, 48-32, edge a minute-and-half into the fourth quarter before Union went on a 20-6 run to get within two, 54-52, on a Chet Carmichael 3-pointer with 47 seconds left.
But Devin Shumaker hit a pair of free throws with 31 seconds left to restore the lead to two possessions for Redbank Valley and help seal the victory.
Shumaker led the Bulldogs with 16 points including going 6 of 8 from the free-throw line – he was 5 of 6 in the fourth quarter. Sam Heeter added 11 points, while Jake Dougherty had nine points and 11 rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Zach Westover also had nine points while adding 14 rebounds for the Bulldogs. Khorey Neiswonger played a pivotal role off the bench for Redbank scoring seven points to go with seven rebounds. He hit a free throw with 14.5 seconds left that set the final score.
Cole Morris led all scorers with 19 points for Union before fouling out with 31 seconds to play. Carmichael added 14 points including eight in the fourth quarter. Lane Cicciarelli chipped in with eight points and 15 rebounds including seven offensive boards.
Redbank Valley started fast building an 18-5 advantage after one quarter thanks to six points fron Neiswonger and five from Jake Dougherty.
Union fought back late in the second quarter and got within 10, 30-20, at halftime on the strength of six second-quarter points from Cicciarelli, but the Bulldogs started the second half on a 10-2 run to get the lead to 18, their largest of the night.
Prior to the game, long-time Union head coach Don Stemmerich was honored for his many contributions to the school and the community. Stemmerich won 636 games as the head boys’ basketball coach at Union over 36 seasons (1956-1993) including nine District 9 championships and a pair of PIAA Western Titles and PIAA runner-up finishes (1967 and 1974). The gym at Union was named after Stemmerich a while back, and a painting of Stemmerich was dedicated Friday night. In addition, he received gifts from the Union All-Sports Boosters as well as the Union boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. Also being honored where the 1967 and 1974 state-runner-up teams as well as Stemmerich’s first District 9 title team (1959) and his last (1981).
