Dec. 20, 2019 Girls’ Hoops Recaps: ECC’s Newton Scores 1,000th Career Point; Sheeler FTs Lift O-E to Win

ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 35, BROCKWAY 30

ST. MARYS, Pa. – Elk County Catholic’s Taylor Newton scored her 1,000th career point, and the Lady Crusaders held off visiting Brockway for a 35-30 win in AML action.

Newton needed 11 points going into the night and finished with 12 points and 17 rebounds reaching the 1,000-point plateau on a third-quarter basket.

ECC needed Newton’s contributions, as the Lady Crusaders were in a battle all night long.

Brockway led 16-10 at the end of the first quarter before ECC took a 21-20 lead into halftime and extended that advantage to 31-24 by the end of the third quarter.

But the Lady Rovers didn’t go away and got things a bit closer in the fourth quarter thanks to four points from Danielle Wood, who finished tied with Selena Buttery with a team-best nine tallies. Buttery also added 10 rebounds and five blocked shots while Ciara Morelli chipped in seven points

Brooke Bauer tied Newton for game-high honors for ECC also scoring 12 points.

OTTO-ELDRED 47, CAMERON COUNTY 45

EMPORIUM, Pa. – Katie Sheeler hit two free throws with less than nine seconds to play to break a 45-all tie and give visiting Port Allegany a 47-45 win over Cameron County in NTL play.

Mallory McKimm had tied the game at 45 for Cameron County when she hit a 3-pointer with 28 seconds to go.

But Sheeler was fouled late and hit both of her free throws to put the Lady Terrors in front.

The Otto-Eldred defense then forced a turnover to secure the win.

Cameron County started fast and led 18-9 at the end of the first quarter before Otto-Eldred got back within two, 20-18, at halftime and then tied the game at 32 by the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Sheeler connected on 9 of 11 free throws, including the two crucial ones at the end, to lift the Lady Terrors to the win.

Sheeler, who was 12 of 15 from the line on the night, scored a game-high 20 points for O-E with Jadelyn Spinney adding 13 points.

McKimm led Cameron County with 15 points and five steals with Hailey Hilfiger completing a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Kaelee Bresslin added 10 points for the Lady Raiders.

ST. MARYS 60, BROOKVILLE 34

BROOKVILLE, Pa. – Megan Quesenberry and Kaylee Muccio combined to score 25 points to lead St. Marys past Brookville, 60-34, for a road D9 League victory.

The Lady Dutch were up 10, 28-18, at the half before blitzing through the Lady Raiders in the second half.

Quesenberry and Muccio each had nine points at the break and finished with 13 and 12 respectively for St. Marys.

Allison Schlimm added eight points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Dutch with Maria Chiappelli added nine points.

Morgan Johnson led Brookville with 13 points and eight rebounds.

MONITEAU 47, KARNS CITY 25

WEST SUNBURY, Pa. – Behind a monster game from Aslyn Pry Moniteau vanquished visiting rival Karns City, 47-25, in KSAC South action.

Pry had 17 points, 16 rebounds, five assists and four steals in the victory.

Haley Pry added 10 points for the Lady Warriors with Abby Rottman chipping in nine tallies and Kristin Auvil eight.

Emma Johns paced Karns City with 14 points.

TYRONE 61, CLEARFIELD 44

HYDE, Pa. – Led by 17 points from Kayelin Gibbons Tyrone had four players score in double digits in a 61-44 Mountain League road victory over Clearfield.

Stephanie Ramsey hit four 3-pointers on her way to 16 points in the victory, while Jaida Parker scored 12 points and Emma Getz 11.

Megan Durandetta paced Clearfield with 12 points, Tesa Miller scored nine tallies and Kylie VanTassel and Olivia Bender each added eight points.

COUDERSPORT 41, NORTHERN POTTER 22

ULYSSES, Pa. – Sarah Chambers and Rosalyn Page combined for 23 points to lead visiting Coudersport to a 41-22 win over Northern Potter in NTL action.

Chambers led the Lady Falcons with 12 points with Page adding 11. Elizabeth Frame also scored nine tallies for Coudersport.

Lydia Zdrojewski paced Northern Potter with five points with Madison Hoopes, Megan Hyde and Courtney Martin each scoring four points. Faith Zdrojewski had a team-high nine rebounds and also scored two points.

PORT ALLEGANY 56, SMETHPORT 10

PORT ALLEGANY, Pa. – Cailey Barnett and Bree Garzel combined for 35 points, 13 rebounds, 10 steals and seven assists to lead Port Allegany to a 56-10 home NTL win over Smethport.

Barnett had 18 points, six rebounds, four steals and three helpers with Garzel adding 17 points, seven rebounds, six steals and four assists.

Evin Stauffer also chipped in nine points for the Lady Gators.

Abby Lutz and Sabrina Tanner each scored four points for Smethport with Tanner also hauling down eight rebounds. MyKayla Deyarmin had six boards and two steals for the Lady Hubbers.

DUBOIS 34, DUBOIS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 22

DUBOIS, Pa. – Olivia Johnson netted a game-high 14 points to lead visiting DuBois past crosstown rival DuBois Central Catholic, 34-22.

Abby Guiher added 10 points for the Lady Beavers.

Jordan Kosko netted seven points to pace DCC.

REDBANK VALLEY 55, MERCER 47

NEW BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Strong second and fourth quarters helped Redbank Valley rebound from its first loss of the season a day earlier to beat Mercer, 55-47.

The Lady Bulldogs trailed 15-13 at the end of the first quarter but outscored the Lady Mustangs 11-4 in the second quarter behind five Alivia Huffman points to take a 24-19 halftime lead.

Mercer scrambled back to within three, 40-37, at the end of the third quarter, but Tara Hinderliter scored eight fourth-quarter points to secure the win for Redbank Valley.

Hinderliter rebounded from her off night Thursday to lead the Lady Bulldogs with 21 points, including 17 in the second half. Madison Forringer and Huffman each added 10 points.

Julie Balaski paced Mercer with 14 points with Delany Fisher adding 12 points.

PUNXSUTAWNEY 56, INDIANA 40

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – Behind strong all-around games from Sarah Weaver and Riley Presloid Punxsutawney swarmed over visiting Indiana, 56-40.

Weaver led the Lady Chucks to their second win of the season over the Lady Indians with 21 points, four rebounds and two assists with Riley Presloid adding 16 points, five rebounds, five steals, two blocks and an assist.

Chloe Presloid chipped in eight points five rebounds in the victory, Abby Gigliotti had a team-best 13 rebounds to go with four points, two steals, two assists and a blocked shot, and Ryley Casaday added 10 rebounds, four points and five assists.

Hope Cook and Eve Fiala each had 12 points to lead Indiana.

TIDIOUTE CHARTER 44, FOREST AREA 32

TIONESTA, Pa. – Nakiesha Krouse and Angelina “Boo” Sabella combined for 28 points to lead visiting Tidioute Charter to a 44-32 win over Forest Area at West Forest.

Jessica Wagner led Forest Area with a season-high 16 points while Megan Clow and Haleigh Tebay each scored seven points.
