Dec. 28, 2018 Boys’ Recaps: Austin Handles Bucktail; ECC, Ridgway to Meet in St. Marys

AUSTIN 65, BUCKTAIL 43

AUSTIN, Pa. – Blake Burgett, Mason Valenti and Dempsey Glover led Austin to a 65-43 win over visiting Bucktail.

Burgett had a game-high 26 points, while Glover collected a game-best 21 rebounds to go with 10 points. Valenti also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while adding five assists.

Gavin Becker paced Bucktail with 12 points.

BROCKWAY 59, DUBOIS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 52

DUBOIS, Pa. – Alec Freemer scored 20 points to lead Brockway to a 59-52 win over DuBois Central Catholic in the opening round of the DuBois Holiday Tournament.

Jon Wood added 17 points and Zane Puhala 12 for the Rovers.

Justin Miknis tied for game-high honors with 20 points for DCC with Nick Felix adding 11 points and Jonathan Kurtz 10.

DUBOIS 46, BROOKVILLE 37

DUBOIS, Pa. – Jonathan Cruz netted 16 points to lead DuBois past Brookville, 46-37, in the opening round of the DuBois Holiday Tournament.

Justin Manduley added 12 points and Chase Husted 11 for the Beavers.

Aaron Park paced Brookville with nine points with Trent Gilhousen adding seven. The Raiders lost the services of second-leading scorer Bryan Dworek, who quit the team earlier in the week. Dworek was averaging 7.7 ppg.

NORTH CLARION 80, A-C VALLEY 67

TIONESTA, Pa. – Kyle Mills scored a career-high 30 points and hauled down eight rebounds to lead North Clarion past A-C Valley, 80-67, on the second day of the Forest Area Christmas Classic at West Forest.

Tyler McCord-Wolbert added 14 points for the unbeaten Wolves with Logan Minich chipping in 12 points and seven assists, Korey Mills nine points and five helpers and Sam Minich five points and five assists.

Levi Orton netted a game-high 33 points, his second straight 30-point game, and 10 rebounds to pace A-C Valley. Eddie Stevanus chipped in 14 points.

REDBANK VALLEY 79, FOREST AREA 40

TIONESTA, Pa. – Freshman Chris Marshall scored 24 points to lead Redbank Valley to a 79-40 win over Forest Area on the second day of the Forest Area Christmas Classic at West Forest

Tanner Kerle added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, Declan Fricko chipped in 15 points, Nick Smith scored 14 points and Bryson Bain had two points and 10 assists.

Aiden Quinn led Forest Area with 15 points with Luke Cussins adding eight.

RIDGWAY 45, JOHNSONBURG 26

ST. MARYS, Pa. – Jake Reynolds and Daunte Allegretto each scored 13 points to lead Ridgway to a 45-26 win over Johnsonburg in the opening round of the Elk County Tournament at St. Marys High School.

Zach Zameroski added nine points in the win for Ridgway, which remained unbeaten.

Garret Gregori led Johnsonburg with 10 points with Isaac Scholder adding nine.

ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 58, ST. MARYS 29

ST. MARYS, Pa. – Alex Breindel netted 14 points to help Elk County Catholic pull away from St. Marys, 58-29, in the opening round of the Elk County Tournament at St. Marys High School.

The unbeaten Crusaders led by just two, 11-9, at the end of the first quarter but outscored the Dutch 47-20 the rest of the way.

Regis Wortman added 11 points for ECC with Will Uberti scoring eight.

Nick Catalone, who hit a pair of first-quarter 3-pointers, led St. Marys with 11 points.

BRADFORD CENTRAL (N.Y.) 63, NORTHERN POTTER 51

JASPER, N.Y. – Bradford Central (N.Y.) used a balanced effort to top Northern Potter, 63-51, in the consolation game of the Jasper-Troupsburg (N.Y.) Tournament.

Steven Spira led the Braves with 14 points with Jordan Sutryk and Blaze Machuga each scoring 13 points and Kobi Wokeman adding 12.

Holden Cowburn had a game-high 23 points for Northern Potter with AJ Lehman adding 10.

MONITEAU 52, MERCER 41

MERCER, Pa. – Behind three fourth-quarter 3-pointers from Gage Neal, Moniteau nailed five triples in the quarter to pull away from Mercer for a 52-41 win in the consolation game of the Mercer Shootout.

The Warriors led by just a point, 33-32, going to the fourth quarter but got hot from the outside to gain separation.

Nate Tack hit the other two threes in the frame for Moniteau, who had hit just one triple through the first three quarters.

Neal led the Warriors with 13 points with Jared Lomenski adding nine and Tack eight.

PUNXSUTAWNEY 58, CLARION 46

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – ‘Daren Byers and Ethan Blose combined to score 27 points to lift Punxsutawney to a 58-46 win over Clarion in the championship game of the Carl Truance Holiday Tournament at Punxsutawney.

Byers led the Chucks with a game-high 14 points with Blose adding 13. Carter Newcome chipped in 11 tallies and Cam Smith scored nine.

Nick Frederick scored 12 points for Clarion with Cal German adding 11 and Archer Mills eight.

CLEARFIELD 83, HARMONY 56

COMMODORE, Pa. – Cade Walker scored a game-best 28 points and added 12 rebounds to give Clearfield an 83-56 win over Harmony in the consolation game of the Purchase Line Christmas Tournament.

Andrew Lopez added 17 points in the victory with Karson Rumsky chipping in 11 points and six rebounds, Matt Pallo 10 points and Taye Lynch six points and seven boards.

MAPLEWOOD 55, KANE 53

SHEFFIELD, Pa. – Camden Mattocks and Jordan Hollabaugh each scored 14 points to help Maplewood edge Kane, 55-53, in the championship game of the Sheffield Sports Boosters Christmas Tournament.

Clay Cox added 11 points for the Tigers with Joel Cox scoring 10.

Chad Greville had a game-high 18 points for Kane with Alex Rezzelle scoring 15 points and Carson Whiteman 11.

YOUNGSVILLE 43, SHEFFIELD 39

SHEFFIELD, Pa. – A 17-4 Youngsville run during the late third and early fourth quarters put the Eagles ahead for good as they held on to defeat Sheffield 43-39 in the Sheffield Sports Boosters Christmas Tournament consolation game Friday.

The Wolverines were up 28-19 with 2:30 to play in the third when Gage Hendrickson hit a 3-pointer to start the Eagles’ rally.

Hendrickson led the Eagles with 20 points, while Tyler Hepinger had 20 to pace Sheffield.

REYNOLDS 52, UNION 50

RIMERSBURG, Pa. – Aidan Mull’s layup with around three seconds left lifted visiting Reynolds to a 52-50 win over Union in the championship game of the Union Christmas Tournament.

Caden Rainey had tied the game for the Golden Knights at 50 when he hit one of two free throws with just under 13 seconds left.

But Mull was left open on the low, left block for an easy layup to win the game for the Raiders, who trailed 43-36 going to the fourth quarter.

Chance Westover led Reynolds with 14 points, including nine in the fourth quarter, with Josh Szymczak adding 12 points.

Rainey had a game-high 17 points for Union, including going 9 of 12 from the line. Quintin Weaver and Nolan Cumberland each added eight points with Weaver adding nine rebounds and Cumberland also collecting eight boards.

SAEGERTOWN 50, VENANGO CATHOLIC 38

RIMERSBURG, Pa. – A 21-point effort from Max Fuller helped Saegertown beat Venango Catholic, 50-38, in the consolation game of the Union Christmas Tournament.

Eli Drua added nine points and Raef Rhoades eight in the win.

Andrew Burda led Venango Catholic with 12 points, Ben Gillispie added 11 and Parker Slagle nine.

CLARION-LIMESTONE 68, KARNS CITY 53

RURAL VALLEY, Pa. – In a rematch of last year’s KSAC Title game, Deion Deas once again had his way with Karns City exploding for a game-high 31 points on 14 made baskets to lead Clarion-Limestone to a 68-53 win over Karns City in the championship game of the West Shamokin Holiday Tournament.

Hayden Callen added 12 points and eight rebounds and Curvin Goheen had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Lions.

Chance Beighley paced Karns City with 17 points. Erik Pfeifer added eight points and eight rebounds and Ethan McElroy and Nathan Waltman each scored eight points.

NORTH PENN-LIBERTY 48, GALETON 42

LIBERTY, Pa. – Behind 22 points from Duncan Zeafla North-Penn Liberty beat Galeton, 48-42, in the opening round of the North Penn-Liberty Christmas Tournament.

Nick Grinnell added eight tallies for the Mounties.

Joel Griffen and Evan Brooks each scored 16 points for Galeton.
