Dec. 28, 2019 Girls’ Basketball: Redbank’s Hinderliter Scores 1,000th Point; Union, St. Marys Win Tourneys

REDBANK VALLEY 67, LIGONIER VALLEY 26

RURAL VALLEY, Pa. – Needing 30 points to score 1,000 in her career, Redbank Valley’s Tara Hinderliter exploded for a career-high 38 points to lead Redbank Valley to a 67-26 win over Ligonier Valley in the consolation game of the West Shamokin Christmas Tournament.

Hinderliter had 21 points by halftime and then scored nine more in the third quarter to reach the milestone before finishing off the game with eight more in the fourth quarter to give her 1,008 in her career moving her past Jen Duhnke into seventh-place in school history in scoring.

Alivia Huffman chipped in eight points in the win for the Lady Bulldogs.

Haley Boyd paced Ligonier Valley with six points.

Hinderliter joins her sister, Brooke, in the 1,000-point club at Redbank Valley. Brooke Hinderliter is the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,997 career points.

UNION 57, CLARION-LIMESTONE 33

RIMERSBURG, Pa. – Tournament MVP Dominika Logue scored 24 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, dished out five assists, came away with three steals and blocked two shots to lead Union to a 57-33 win over Clarion-Limestone in the championship game of the Union Christmas Tournament.

Logue was at her best offensively in the second half scoring 14 points to help the Golden Damsels pull away after taking a 23-17 halftime lead.

Behind eight Logue third-quarter points, Union outscored the Lady Lions 18-6 in the third quarter to gain separation.

Logue talked about the victory.

Maggie Minick and Hailey Kriebel also had solid games for the Golden Damsels with Minich recording a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds and Kriebel adding nine points and 13 rebounds. Kennedy Vogle chipped in eight points. Minick was also named to the all-tournament team.

Frances Milliron led C-L with 12 points, seven rebounds and two steals with Kendall Dunn grabbing a team-best eight rebounds to go with four points and two steals. Janelle Pezzuti chipped in four points and six boards.

ST. MARYS 42, RIDGWAY 25

ST. MARYS, Pa. – St. Marys used a strong defensive effort and a yeoman’s effort on the offensive glass to win its second consecutive Elk County Tournament title with a 42-25 win over Ridgway at St. Marys High School.

The championship is the fourth in the past five years for the Lady Dutch, who limited Ridgway to six made field goals, including just two in the first half with both coming in the first quarter.

The defense helped St. Marys take a 21-14 halftime lead that the Lady Dutch stretched to 31-17 going to the fourth quarter.

Kaylee Muccio paced St. Marys with a game-high 12 points with Lauren Eckert adding 11 and Megan Quesenberry seven.

Julie Peterson led Ridgway with 10 points with Christina Fullem and Gabbi Rohr each adding six tallies.

BROOKVILLE 66, BROCKWAY 38

BROOKVILLE, Pa. – Tournament MVP Marcy Schindler and teammate Lauren Hergert both turned in double-double performances in leading Brookville to their third straight Christmas Tournament title in a 66-38 win over Brockway.

Schindler finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds while Hergert added 13 points and 12 rebounds. Hergert and Morgan Johnson were also all-tournament picks with Johnson scored 12 points along with her twin sister Madison. Alayna Haight came off the bench to score eight points.

All-tourney pick Selena Buttery lead Brockway with 14 points and nine rebounds.

DUBOIS 43, DUBOIS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 41

BROOKVILLE, Pa. – Saige Weible and Olivia Johnson combined for 22 points, as DuBois held off DuBois Central Catholic, 43-41, to take third place at the Brookville Christmas Tournament.

Weible led the Lady Beavers with 12 points with Johnson recording a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.

DuBois led 43-36 with 3:19 left only to see DCC score the game’s final five points with a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but Maia Cogley’s three-point shot misfired just before the final horn.

Martina Swalligan paced DCC with 11 tallies.

NORTH PENN-LIBERTY 34, GALETON 31

CANTON, Pa. – Keirsten Mitstifer and Eva Rice combined to score 22 points, as North Penn-Liberty beat Galeton, 34-31, in the consolation game of the Canton Tournament.

Mitstifer led all corers with 12 points with Rice adding 10.

Alli Mackensky, who was named to the All-Tournament squad, led Galeton with 10 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and five blocked shots. Cara Parsell chipped in nine points, 13 rebounds, three assists and a steal for the Lady Tigers with Jessie Evans scoring eight points to go with four assists, two steals and two rebounds. Lauren Sauley also pulled down nine boards and scored four points while coming away with two steals and a blocked shot.

HAZELTON 63, PUNXSUTAWNEY 44

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – A strong start helped Hazleton claim the championship of the Carl Truance Holiday Tournament with a 63-44 win over host Punxsutawney.

Behind nine points from Marissa Trivelpiece, the Lady Cougars built a 19-11 lead at the end of the first quarter that expanded to 33-23 by halftime.

Trivelpiece finished with a game-high 18 points with Kyra Antolick adding 12 points and Faith Grula 11.

Riley Presloid paced Punxsutawney, which shot 29.2 percent (14 of 48) with 17 points. Ryley Casday had a team-best nine rebounds while adding six points and Kierstin Riley chipped in seven points and six rebounds.

MARION CENTER 76, MONITEAU 36

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – Marion Center raced out to a 20-point lead after one quarter of play on its way to capturing third place at the Carl Truance Holiday Tournament hosted by Punxsutawney with a 76-36 win over Moniteau.

The Lady Stingers led 27-7 at the end of eight minutes thanks to 11 points from Alexa Ackerman, who hit three 3-pointers in the quarter, and seven points from Jocilyn Thompson.

Ackerman ended up hitting eight triples in the game while finishing with a game-high 30 points, while Thompson chipped in 12 tallies.

Aslyn Pry paced Moniteau with 13 points and 16 rebounds with Kristin Auvil also adding 13 points and being named to the All-Tournament team.

ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 39, JOHNSONBURG 34

ST. MARYS, Pa. – Building a 13-point halftime lead, Elk County Catholic held off a strong second-half push by Johnsonburg to beat the Ramettes, 39-34, in the consolation game of the Elk County Tournament at St. Marys High School.

ECC led 24-11 at the break but was outscored 23-15 in the second half, including 12-6 in the fourth quarter.

Tami Geci paced ECC with 15 points with Taylor Newton adding 12 but none in the fourth quarter.

Kaci Stelene led Johnsonburg with 14 points.

NORTH CLARION 43, KANE 34

KANE, Pa. – North Clarion overcame a cold shooting night but playing strong defense to claim the Kane Christmas Tournament title with a 43-34 win over the host Lady Wolves.

The She-Wolves shot just 31.4 percent (16 of 51) from the field but forced Kane into 31 turnovers while holding the Lady Wolves to 11 made shots, none from behind the arc, to get the victory.

Abby Gatesman and Mackenzie Bauer each scored 10 points to lead the way for North Clarion with tournament MVP Haley Sherman adding nine tallies. Trinity Thompson chipped in four points and 11 rebounds. Gatesman and Gabby Schmader, who scored four points in the victory, were also named to the All-Tournament team.

Emily Bucheit had a game-high 15 points for Kane with Sarri Swanson adding 14 tallies. The duo combined to go 9 of 10 from the free-throw line with Swanson going a perfect 4 of 4 and Bucheit hitting 5 of 6 charity shots.

North Clarion led 16-10 at halftime and 32-19 at the end of three quarters.

CLARION 63, EISENHOWER 23

KANE, Pa. – Kait Constantino and Jordan Best combined for 34 points, as Clarion rolled past Eisenhower, 63-23, in the consolation game of the Kane Christmas Tournament.

Constantino led the Lady Cats with 20 points and is now 34 shy of 1,000 in her career, while Best added 14 points. Payton Simko chipped in eight tallies for Clarion with Ava Cherico scoring seven points and Behkah Ketner and Noel Anthony six each.

IMANI CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 46, A-C VALLEY 44

MERCER, Pa. – Ayanna Muhammad drove to the free-throw line and nailed a shot at the horn to give Imani Christian Academy a 46-44 win over A-C Valley in the consolation game of the Mercer Christmas Tournament.

With the game tied at 44, Imani Christian inbounded under its own hoop and threw a half-court pass over the top to Muhammad who drove to the charity stripe before hitting the game-winning shot with two defenders on her for her 10th and 11th points of the game.

That ruined a fourth-quarter comeback by A-C Valley, which trailed 36-28 going to the final eight minutes but outscored Imani Christian 16-10 in the final quarter behind six points from Meah Ielase, all six of the points Ielase scored in the game.

Andrea Meals, who was named to the all-tournament team, led A-C Valley with 13 points with Rachel Cullen scoring 10 and Avah Burke nine.

JERSEY SHORE 48, NORTHERN POTTER 24

MANSFIELD, Pa. – Sadie Griswold and Aubrey Stetts each scored 11 points to lead Jersey Shore to a 48-24 win over Northern Potter in the consolation game of the North Penn-Mansfield Lady Tigers Holiday Tournament.

Courtney Martin, who was named to the all-tournament team, led Northern Potter with 10 points with Aubrey Anderson scoring eight.

CAMERON COUNTY 42, SHEFFIELD 19

RIMERSBURG, Pa. – Kaelee Bresslin scored a game-high 20 points to lead Cameron County past Sheffield, 42-19, in the consolation game of the Union Christmas Tournament.

Hailey Hilfiger added 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Raiders, who led by just three, 16-13, at halftime before outscoring Sheffield 26-6 after the break with Bresslin, who hit five 3-pointers in the game, scoring nine of her 20 points in the third quarter and 14 of her points after halftime.

Alyssa Dunham paced Sheffield with six points with Allison Schmader adding five.

BUCKTAIL 44, AUSTIN 32

RENOVO, Pa. – Kayla Probert scored a game-high 20 points to lead Bucktail to a 44-32 win over visiting Austin.

Taylor Brewer led Austin with 11 points, five rebounds, five steals and four blocked shot with Sari Setzer adding seven points and Kendra Valenti five points and 12 rebounds.
