JOHNSONBURG, Pa. – Cole Morris hit 5 of 6 free throws in the final two minutes to help ninth-seeded Union outlast eighth-seeded Johnsonburg 49-48 in the opening round of the District 9 Class A boys’ basketball playoffs Tuesday night at Johnsonburg.

Morris, who netted a game-high 23 points, helped the Golden Knights (13-10) overcome a one-point deficit, 43-42, with just over two minutes to play by hitting the charity shots.

It was Johnsonburg (12-12) who rallied first in the fourth quarter. The Rams trailed 36-29 going to the fourth quarter but used a 14-6 run to take the lead.

Chet Carmichael added 12 points for Union, while Zane Hodgdon led Johnsonburg with 18, and Christian Cherry added 16.

Union will take on top-seeded Elk County Catholic in the quarterfinals at a time, date and site to be determined.

DUBOIS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 59, OSWAYO VALLEY 30

DUBOIS, Pa. – A 14-2 second-quarter run helped sixth-seeded DuBois Central Catholic pull away from shorthanded Oswayo Valley, the 11th seed, for  59-30 win in the opening round of the District 9 Class A boys’ basketball playoffs Tuesday night in DuBois.

The Cardinals (19-5) led by just four, 13-9, a minute into the second quarter before going on the run fueled by a pair of Neil Fitzpatrick 3-pointers, to take a 33-15 halftime lead.

DCC then held Oswayo Valley (11-12), who was playing without leading scorer Brandon Brabham (17.9 ppg), who missed the game with an ankle injury, without a field goal in the third quarter while extending the lead to 46-20 going to the fourth quarter.

Dane Aucker led DCC with 17 points, including 13 in the first half, while Christian LaParne had 14 points. Dallas Gray chipped in with 11 rebounds and four points.

Ricardo Gross led Oswayo Valley with nine points, while Dustin Buchanan had seven tallies.

DCC will take on third-seeded Cameron County in the semifinals at a site, time and day to be determined in the quarterfinals.
