Jan. 3, 2020 Boys’ Hoops: Coudy Picks up Big Road Win at Ridgway; Karns City Rolls Past Clarion

COUDERSPORT 50, RIDGWAY 39

RIDGWAY, Pa. – In a rematch of the last two District 9 Class 2A title games, visiting Coudersport used strong first and third quarters to beat Ridgway, 50-39.

The Falcons, who beat Ridgway in the title game two years ago, jumped out to a 13-5 lead at the end of a quarter of play thanks in part to five points from Dillon Keglovits.

But Ridgway, the defending champions, rallied in the second quarter and got back within a point, 17-16, at halftime thanks to four points apiece from Dan Park and Zack Zameroski.

Coming out of the locker room, Coudersport again had the better of the play outscoring the Elkers by eight, 14-6, in the third quarter to push the lead back to nine, 31-22.

Hayden Keck led the way in the third for the Falcons with six points with Derek Easton and Kolby VanWhy each hitting 3-pointers in the frame.

VanWhy then went 4 of 6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter with Keglovits scoring six more points in the quarter to help seal the win.

Keglovits led Coudersport with 13 points, VanWhy chipped in with 12 and Keck had 11.

KARNS CITY 70, CLARION 55

CLARION, Pa. – Karns City overcame a slow start to pick up a 70-55 road KSAC South win over Clarion.

The Gremlins trailed 11-2 early but used an 8-0 second-quarter spurt to take a 30-27 halftime lead then built the advantage to double digits in the third quarter with a 13-6 run that helped them take a 53-41 lead into the final eight minutes. Karns City put the game away with a 15-1 run in the fourth quarter.

Chase Beighley led the way in scoring for Karns City with 21 points and went 7 of 10 from the line. Beighley added four steals and two rebounds.

The Gremlins also got a huge lift from Caiden Corbett, who scored a career-high 16 points after entering the game with 26 points the entire season. Corbett was named the Hager Paving Player of the Game and talked about the win.

Micah Rupp and Nathan Waltman, playing his first game of the season after recovering from a football injury, also provided big sparks for Karns City. Rupp scored 11 points to go with 10 rebounds, four blocked shots and a steal with Waltman adding 10 points and three boards.

Cal German led all scorers with 25 points for Clarion while adding four steals and six rebounds with Hunter Craddock adding five points and a game-high 14 rebounds, nine on the offensive end. Skylar Rhoades also hauled down seven boards to go with three points with Nick Frederick scoring six points to go with five rebounds.

BRADFORD 53, ST. MARYS 49

BRADFORD, Pa. – Tyler Gigliotti scored 14 of his game-high 27 points in the fourth quarter, as Bradford rallied past visiting St. Marys, 53-49, in D9 League action.

The Owls trailed by five, 32-27, going to the fourth quarter but scored nearly as many points in the final eight minutes (26) as they had in the first 24 minutes.

Cam Austin chipped in nine points in the win for Bradford with Peyton Manion scoring seven.

Evan Schmidt collected a game-high 15 rebounds in the win with Manion adding seven boards and Austin six. Schmidt also scored a pair of points on two fourth-quarter free throws.

Cahil Parish led St. Marys with 18 points, including nine in the fourth quarter, with Mitchell Reiter scoring five of his 13 points in the final eight minutes.

KANE 68, SHEFFIELD 33

SHEFFIELD, Pa. – Chad Greville led a trio of Kane scores in double digits, as the Wolves earned a 68-33 victory over Sheffield on the road in AML action.

Greville had a game-high 20 points to lead the Wolves. Mason Zuzek had 16 points with Zuke Smith adding 13.

Tyler Hepinger paced the Wolverines with 10 tallies. Tony Richards and Jake Vinopal each had seven points.

ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 52, DUBOIS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 25

DUBOIS, Pa. – Regis Wortman scored 12 points to help visiting Elk County Catholic top DuBois Central Catholic, 52-25, in AML action.

Isaac Wortman added nine points for the balanced Crusaders with Leo Gregory scoring eight and Mason McAllister and Will Uberti six each

Jalen Kosko led DCC with 12 tallies.

BROCKWAY 54, CURWENSVILLE 39

CURWENSVILLE, Pa. – Alec Freemer led a balanced offensive attack to help Brockway earn a 54-39 AML victory over Curwensville on the road.

Freemer had a game-high 19 points for the Rovers. Jon Wood added nine tallies with Lewis Painter chipping in seven. Jared Marchiori and Marcus Copelli each had four points.

Ty Terry paced the Tide with 13 points, including three 3-points. Trevor Lansberry netted 11 points.

BROOKVILLE 70, PUNXSUTAWNEY 36

BROOKVILLE, Pa. – Holding visiting Punxsutawney to nine first-half points, Brookville cruised to a 70-36 D9 League win.

The Raiders led 16-2 after the first quarter and 36-9 by halftime, their largest lead being the final score as they shot an impressive 57 percent (25-for-44) from the field while limiting the Chucks to just 27 percent (14-for-52).

Aaron Park turned in a double-double performance with 20 points and 12 rebounds, making 4 of 6 shots from the field and 12 of 15 from the foul line. Griffin Ruhlman and Hunter Geer each came off the bench to score double figures, Ruhlman with 13 and Geer with 10 points.

Daren Byers and Andrew Young led the Chucks with nine points.

NORTH CLARION 63, VENANGO CATHOLIC 38

OIL CITY, Pa. – Devon Walters hit four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points to lead North Clarion to a 63-38 road victory over Venango Catholic in KSAC North action.

Drew Gatesman had 12 points for the Wolves with Matson Higgins chipping in nine points and four assists. Josh Daum netted eight points and Jacob Bauer had five points, seven steals and five assists.

Andrew Burda had a game-high 21 points while going 8-for-10 at the charity stripe to pace Venango Catholic in the loss.

MONITEAU 61, REDBANK VALLEY 47

WEST SUNBURY, Pa. – Ethan McDeavitt exploded for 21 points and grabbed six rebounds as Moniteau earned a 61-47 victory over visiting Redbank Valley in KSAC South play.

Kyle Pry added 19 points, six rebounds and three assists for the Warriors with Quinton Scriven chipping in 12 tallies and seven boards. Gage Neal chipped in four points and eight assists while grabbing 10 boards.

Despite the loss, Bryson Bain led a trio of double-digit scorers with 13 points for the Bulldogs. Owen Magagnotti added 12 points with Chris Marshall chipping in 10.

KEYSTONE 73, CRANBERRY 36

KNOX, Pa.- Behind 22 points from Isaak Jones, Keystone topped visiting Cranberry, 73-36.

Colin Say added 10 points for the Panthers with Gavin Hogue and Troy Johnson each chipping in seven. Alex Rapp had five assists and four steals to go along with two points.

Matt McQuaide had 21 points in the loss for Cranberry. JT Stahlman added 12 tallies.

CLARION-LIMESTONE 71, FOREST AREA 24

STRATTANVILLE, Pa. – Deion Deas and Hayden Callen combined for 37 points to lead Clarion-Limestone past visiting Forest Area, 71-24.

Deas tallied a game-high 19 points for the Lions with Callen adding 18. Curvin Goheen chipped in eight tallies while Mitch Knepp and Jordan Hesdon each netted seven. Goheen also grabbed 10 rebounds to go with four steals and three assists, while Deas had five assists and four steals and Callen six rebounds, five steals and two blocked shots.

Noah Burke paced the Fires with eight points and six rebounds.

CLEARFIELD 65, OTTO-ELDRED 40

HYDE, Pa. – Eighteen points, including four 3-pointers, from Karson Rumsky lifted Clearfield over visiting Otto-Eldred, 65-40.

Cade Walker added 17 points for the Bison and went 5-for-6 at the line. Cole Miller hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points and Andrew Lopez had three points, nine assists and five rebounds.

Cole Sebastian netted 13 points in the loss for Otto-Eldred. Jake Merry chipped in eight points with a pair of 3-pointers.
