Jan. 31, 2020 Girls’ Hoops: N. Clarion Wins Fifth Straight KSAC North Crown; Kane’s Saf has Career Night; Punxsy Rallies for Win

NORTH CLARION 67, A-C VALLEY 22

FOXBURG, Pa. – Racing out to 27-point halftime lead, North Clarion clinched its fifth consecutive KSAC North title with a 67-22 win at A-C Valley.

Abby Gatesman hit three first-half 3-pointers and scored 14 of her game-high 22 points before the break to help the unbeaten She-Wolves take a 37-10 halftime lead. Gatesman added seven assists and six steals in the win.

Meanwhile, Mackenzie Bauer scored eight of her 13 points in the third quarter to help North Clarion expand the lead to 61-16 after three. Bauer also had seven steals and five assists.

Gabby Schmader added eight points while hitting a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter, while Trinity Thompson chipped in eight points and 10 rebounds.

Rachel Cullen’s six points led A-C Valley.

The win swept the season series from A-C Valley, which sits in second place in the KSAC North with two losses. While both teams have two games left in divisional play, North Clarion claims the North title based on the season sweep of A-C Valley regardless of what it does in its final two divisional contests.

KANE 51, OTTO-ELDRED 32

DUKE CENTER, Pa. – Ainsley Saf hit six 3-pointers on her way to a career-high 27 points, as Kane rolled past visiting Otto-Eldred, 51-32.

Saf hit three of her long balls in the first half and scored nine of her points in the opening 16 minutes. She had 11 points after three quarters of play and then got hot burying three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter while scoring 16 fourth-quarter points.

Emily Bucheit chipped in nine points in the win for the Lady Wolves.

Katie Sheeler led Otto-Eldred with nine points, four steals and four rebounds, while Haley Cousins scored eight points and Bir Heller chipped in three points and nine rebounds.

PUNXSUTAWNEY 51, WEST SHAMOKIN 44

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – Sarah Weaver scored seven of her team-high 15 points in the fourth quarter, as Punxsutawney rallied past beating West Shamokin, 51-44.

The Lady Chucks trailed 36-32 going to the fourth quarter but outscored the Lady Wolves, 19-8, in the fourth quarter with Chloe Presloid also scoring six points on a pair of 3-pointers in the final eight minutes.

Chloe Presloid added 11 points with Ryley Casaday adding 10 points and nine rebounds and Riley Presloid nine. Kierstin Riley hauled down 10 rebounds to go with four points.

Sophie Fusaro scored a game-high 21 points with Lydia McIlwain adding 10 points.

HOMER-CENTER 61, BROOKVILLE 59

BROOKVILLE, Pa. – Annah Elliott’s two free throws with 2.1 seconds left lifted Homer-Center to a 61-59 win over Brookville.

Homer-Center took a 31-20 lead into the third quarter before Brookville reeled off a 28-8 quarter that helped give the Lady Raiders a 50-39 lead in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. Morgan Johnson scored 14 of her game-high 24 points in the third to spark the rally.

But Homer-Center held Brookville scoreless the final 3:29 of the game and scored eight straight points over that stretch to get the win.

Marlee Kochman led Homer-Center with 18 points while Macy Sardone and Molly Kosmack each scored 13 points.

Also for the Lady Raiders, Lauren Hergert had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Marcy Schindler scored nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Madison Johnson added eight points.

CLARION-LIMESTONE 50, UNION 46

RIMERSBURG, Pa. – Kendall Dunn netted nine of her 11 points in the fourth quarter as Clarion-Limestone upset Union, 50-46.

Frances Milliron led the Lady Lions offense with 15 points and went 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. Janelle Pezzuti hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 12 points while Anna Kennemuth added seven.

Dominika Logue had a game-high 18 tallies for the Damsels and went 4-for-3 at the free-throw line. Hailey Kriebel went 5-for-7 at the line and finished with 10 points.

It was the third meeting of the year between the teams and the first win for C-L, which lost 66-35 in mid-December at C-L and 57-33 just after Christmas at the Union Christmas Tournament.

ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 42, SHEFFIELD 21

ST. MARYS, Pa. – Taylor Newton had 16 points to help Elk County Catholic defeat Sheffield, 42-21.

Newton completed the double-double for the Lady Crusaders with 10 rebounds. Tami Geci added eight points and had seven steals while Brooke Bauer chipped in six points.

Marissa Grubbs paced the Lady Wolverines with seven points.

CURWENSVILLE 45, JOHNSONBURG 24

JOHNSONBURG, Pa. – Brianna Swindell went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line and finished with 13 points as Curwensville earned a 45-24 road victory over Johnsonburg.

Hannah Condon and Alyssa Bakaysa each had seven points for the Lady Tide while Skylar Pentz hit a pair of 3-pointers to finish with six points.

Ella Linberg and Emma King each netted nine points to pace the Rammettes in the loss.

ST. MARYS 56, DUBOIS 22

ST. MARYS, Pa. – Kaylee Muccio and Britney Shaw each scored nine points to lead a balanced offensive attack in St. Marys 56-22 victory over visiting DuBois.

Lauren Eckert and Megan Quesenberry each had eight tallies for the Lady Dutch offense. Kyla Johnson had seven and Allison Schlimm chipped in five.

Oliva Johnson had seven points in the loss for the Lady Beavers and Abby Guiher netted six.

PENNS VALLEY 69, CLEARFIELD 51

HYDE, Pa. – Behind 26 points from Hannah Montminy, Penns Valley outlasted Clearfield on the road, 69-51.

Leah Beben added 16 points for the Lady Rams and Kennedy Welshans had nine.

Tesa Miller had 18 tallies for the Lady Bison in the loss and Megan Durandetta chipped in 11.

NORTHERN POTTER 31, GALETON 22

GALETON, Pa. – Courtney Martin had eight points and 12 rebounds to lead a balanced offensive attack in Northern Potters 31-22 road victory over Galeton.

Chloe Breemer had six points and Aubrey Anderson added five for the Lady Panthers. Madison Hoopes chipped in four while Faith Zdrojewski and Megan Hyde each had three.

Cara Parsell paced the Lady Tigers with 10 tallies with Jessie Evans chipping in eight.

PORT ALLEGANY 60, OSWAYO VALLEY 21

SHINGLEHOUSE, Pa. – Behind 38 combined points and 10 3-pointers from Cailey Barnett and Bree Garzel, Port Allegany defeated Oswayo Valley, 60-21.

Barnett and Garzel each hit five 3-pointers with Barnett leading the Lady Gators offense with 21 points and Garzel adding 17. Evin Stauffer chipped in nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Macy West had 12 points to pace the Green Wave in the loss.

COUDERSPORT 58, CAMERON COUNTY 14

COUDERSPORT, Pa. – Sarah Chambers and Mikayla Gunn combined for 37 points as Coudersport rolled past visiting Cameron County, 58-14.

Chambers led the Lady Falcons, who clinched at least a share of the NTL title with the win, with 20 points. Gunn hit three 3-pointers and finished with 17 tallies while Emma Chambers added 10.

Mikenna Farabaugh had four points to pace the Lady Raiders.

SMETHPORT 46, AUSTIN 19

SMETHPORT, Pa. – Erin Herzog had a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds to help Smethport defeat visiting Austin, 46-19.

Abby Lutz added eight points and six rebounds for the Lady Hubbers while Mykayla Deyarmin and Sabrina Tanner each had seven tallies.

Ally Nelson hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with nine points to pace Austin in the loss.

RIDGWAY 39, EISENHOWER 24

RIDGWAY, Pa. – Christina Fullem led a balanced offensive effort with 11 points for Ridgway, as the Lady Elkers got defensive in a 39-24 win over visiting Eisenhower.

Gabbi Rohr added eight points in the victory for Ridgway with Lindsey Steis, Julie Peterson and Eve Colbaugh each scoring six points.

Lilee Renninger led Eisenhower with eight points.
