Baseball Recaps

Mount Union 9, Kane 0

Mount Union took advantage of extra-base hits to capitalize on their scoring chances to top Kane, 9-0, eliminating Kane from playoff contention. The Trojans scored four first-inning runs, with Tyler Renninger driving in a pair with a double, and Vince Lear hitting a two-run shot one batter later to give Mount Union an early lead.

A bases-loaded walk gave Mount Union a 5-0 lead after four, and the Trojans took advantage of walks and errors in the seventh to score four runs, putting the game away. Bryce Danish led the Trojans with three hits, including a double and two RBI. He also pitched the final 3 2/3 innings for Mount Union, allowing four hits and striking out three. Ryan Scott pitched the first 3 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and striking out six while walking five. Carson Whiteman had three hits for Kane in the loss.

Softball Recaps

C-L 6, Clarion 2

A clutch seventh-inning double by Abby Knapp proved to be the difference-maker in C-L’s 6-2 win over Clarion in the Class A second-place game, advancing the Lions to the state playoffs.

After a pair of errors and a walk loaded the bases for C-L in the top of the seventh with one out, Knapp came up clutch, smacking a ball down the line in left to drive in a pair of runs. Knapp’s hit was mishandled by the left fielder, allowing a third run to score and Knapp to move to third base, giving C-L a late 5-2 advantage. Knapp would later score on a wild pitch to set the 6-2 final score.
