Keystone topples top-seeded Coudersport to move into girls’ A title game

ST. MARYS, Pa. – Behind the strength of a 21-6 run to end the first half, Keystone moved into the District 9 Class A girls’ championship game for the third time in five years with a 52-37 win over top-seeded Coudersport in the semifinals Wednesday night at St. Marys High School.

The fourth-seeded Lady Panthers trailed by five early, 9-4, before ending the first quarter on a 7-0 spurt. They then outscored Coudersport 14-6 in the second quarter to move the lead to double digits, 25-15, at halftime.

The lead got to as many as 11, 30-19, early in the second half on an Amber Hess 3-pointer before Coudersport answered with a 9-3 run of its own behind four points from Emily Morey to cut the Keystone edge to just five, 33-28, with 2:26 left in the third quarter.

But Keystone pushed the led back to seven, 39-32, by the end of the quarter, and McKenzie Byerly nailed a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter to get the lead back to double digits at 42-32.

The Byerly three started a 7-2 Keystone run that helped the Lady Panthers gain a 46-34 lead three minutes left to play.

Coudy tried to rally, as Macy Gleason hit a 3-pointer to get the Lady Falcons backwithin nine, 46-37, with 2:54 to play. But Keystone ended the game on a 6-0 spurt.  

Taylor Geer had another huge game for Keystone with 15 points, 17 rebounds, three steals, two blocks and an assist.

Hess added 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals, while Josselin Geer had 13 points and five rebounds.

Morey led Coudersport with a game-high 16 points, all in the first three quarters. Gleason added 10.

Keystone will take on Elk County Catholic in the championship game Saturday at Tippin Gym. The time on the game has yet to be announced.

Coudersport will face North Clarion in the consolation game either Friday or Saturday at a site and time to be announced.
