Marconi, Gatesman, Newton Named All-State in Basketball

ALTOONA, Pa. – Led by first-team Class 2A selection Ella Marconi, District 9 had three players earn Pennsylvania Sports Writers All-Star Girls’ Basketball honors.

Joining Marconi in being honored are North Clarion’s Abby Gatesman and Elk County Catholic’s Taylor Newton, who were both third-team Class 1A selections.

Marconi, the All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com District 9 Player of the Year, was a second-team choice in 2018 as a junior and earned first-team honors this year after leading Kane to its first-ever District 9 championship and it’s first-ever PIAA Playoff win. The Lady Wolves advanced to the PIAA quarterfinals, while Marconi averaged a District 9-leading 22.9 points per game to go with 12.0 rebounds, 4.2 blocks and 1.0 assists per contest. She also had 22 steals and shot 64.9 percent (255 of 393) from the field and 71.0 percent (152 of 214) from the free-throw line.

Scoring 20 or more points 20 times on the season while topping 25 13 times with a pair of 30-point games, Marconi set the Kane career scoring mark with 1,723 career tallies.

Gatesman, a junior, helped lead North Clarion to its third consecutive District 9 Class 1A title by averaging 14.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.8 steals and 1.2 blocks per game. She shot 47.7 percent from the field and 45.3 percent from 3-point range while also hitting 76.4 percent of her free throws.

The first-team All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com All-District selection will enter her senior season with 837 career points.

Newton, a junior, led Elk County Catholic to the District 9 Class 1A playoffs by averaging 17.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.7 steals per game. She shot 48 percent from the field.

The first-team All American Awards & Engraving D9Sports.com All-District selection will enter her senior season with 924 career points.
