SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Brookville’s Ryan Thrush defended his PIAA Class 2A title in the 400-meter dash winning the event for the second straight year Saturday at Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium.
Thrush ran a time of 48.18 finished just ahead of Hill-Freedman’s Armonte Paulk (48.56).
In addition to Thrush’s title, District 9 enjoyed three runner-up spots Saturday as well.
St. Marys’ Tom Bojalad was second in the boys’ 2A shot put with a throw of 57-feet, 8 ¾-inches, Kane’s Joseph Newton was second in the boys’ 2A 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.68 and Moniteau’s Kendall Grossman tied for second in the girls’ 2A pole vault going over the bar at 11-0.
Grossman tied with Loyalsock Township’s Hailey Zurich and Bellwood-Antis’ Alexis Gerwert. They were all behind South Williamsport’s Katie Jones, who set the meet record at 13-4.
Newton, meanwhile, won his heat in the semifinals in the 110 hurdles in a time of 14.87 before falling to Camp Hill’s Zack Kuntz (14.47) by .21 of a second in the finals.
The District 9 girls’ shot putters placed in Class 2A with District 9 champion Tori Obenrader of North Clarion taking sixth (40-2), Elk County Catholic’s Cassidy Cunningham finishing seventh (40-1) and Kane’s Trinity Clark taking eight (38-1 ½).
Also placing from District 9 Saturday were Redbank Valley’s Jared Kespelher in the boys’ 2A 300-meter hurdles (39.93), ECC’s Zachary Wortman in the boys’ 2A 3,200-meter run (9:29.07), ECC’s Ben Koss in the boys’ 2A pole vault (13-6).
