Schindler Explodes for Career-High 26 Points to Help Brookville Girls Repeat as D9 3A Champs

KNOX, Pa. – Marcy Schindler exploded for a career-high 26 points and hauled down 12 rebounds to lead Brookville to a second consecutive District 9 Class 3A girls’ basketball title with a 54-40 win over Moniteau Thursday night at Keystone High School.

“It feels awesome,” Schindler said. “I never thought we would get two in a row. I really think we deserved it.”

Relisten to the game:

For all intent and purpose, the game was over by halftime, as the Lady Raiders (18-5) built a 20-point, 33-13, halftime lead.

It was a combination of good outside shooting – Brookville hit six first-half 3-pointers – and pressure defense – Moniteau turned the ball over 12 times in the half including nine in the first quarter – that helped the Lady Raiders get the first-half edge.

“I think just the ball pressure we had, the press,” Schindler said when asked what the key to the first-half surge was. “They couldn’t handle it. They really crumbled under the pressure.”

Schindler was right in the middle of the first-half action scoring 14 points before halftime, including hitting a pair of 3-pointers.

“I really wanted this,” Schindler said. “I’m so glad me and my team could do this and we could do it against such a good team.”

Up 20 at the break, Brookville got sloppy in the second half turning the ball over 11 times in the third quarter which helped Moniteau cut into the lead with the Lady Warriors reducing the deficit to 15, 40-25, at the end of the third quarter.

But a 12-2 Lady Raiders run at the start of the fourth quarter doused any thought of Moniteau comeback, as Schindler scored the first five points of the quarter, Morgan Johnson added four and Madison Johnson three.

Only a game-ending 11-0 run by Moniteau, which included scoring eight points from the free-throw line on 8 of 8 shooting, made the score look closer than it really was.

Morgan Johnson finished with 14 points with Madison adding eight for Brookville.

Andie Arblaster finished with 12 points to pace Moniteau. Aslyn Pry had 11 and Kristin Auvil eight.

Brookville will now take on Chestnut Ridge in a PIAA sub-regional game Tuesday, Feb. 26, at Clearfield High School.

NOTES – The back-to-back titles are the first for Brookville in 21 years. The Lady Raiders won three in a row in Class 3A from 1996-98.
