NO. 20: MONITEAU RALLIES TO WIN D9 2A BASEBALL CROWN
To say there was anything normal about the District 9 Class 2A baseball title game May 28 at Showers Field in DuBois would be a stretch.
The game was delayed multiple times by weather, including one lightning strike that actually knocked the lights and scoreboard out at Showers Field.
But in the end, it was seventh-inning lighting provided by Moniteau catcher Jared Lominski that gave the Warriors a 5-4 win over Coudersport to claim the D9 title.
It was a title that didn’t look like it was coming after Coudersport built a 4-0 lead off Moniteau ace Hunter Fitzingo just two innings into the game thanks in large part to a three-run first.
But Moniteau battled back in the third inning with a four-spot to tie the game, but the Warriors were struggling to square up against Coudersport reliever Kolby VanWhy before Lominski got a hold of a pitch leading off the seventh and sent it over the 333-foot sign in center field to break the tie and give the Warriors the title.
