Hungry, Hungry, Hummell: ‘I Like to Bait the Quarterback to Throw the Ball My Way’

CLARION, Pa. (EYT/D9) – It isn’t easy being the quarterback on the field, let alone the court, but that is exactly what Ryan Hummell has embraced during his junior year at Clarion-Limestone and with the Central Clarion Wildcats.

At first glance, it’s easy to see why Hummell is the guy you want to be the facilitator. The 6-foot, slender junior is the true definition of a team-first guy.

“All I want to do is win ball games and make my teammates better,” Hummel said. “As a unit, if we can just get 1% better every day from the start of the season, we should be in good shape.”

A ballhawk lurking in the Wildcat secondary, as a sophomore, Hummell was an integral part of successful Central Clarion defense, totaling nine tackles, one sack, and three interceptions in just four games of action as the Wildcats finished the season with a 5-1 regular-season record.

“I like to bait the quarterback to throw the ball my way,” said Hummell. “Even if I look a step behind, I have enough closing speed to track the ball and the receiver down.”

On the court, it’s the same song and dance; Hummell loves defense. During the 2020-2021 campaign, Hummell was a pure facilitating guard for the Clarion-Limestone Lions, averaging 2.7 steals a game to go along with 2.4 assists.

“We finished second in the conference, so basketball season was a lot of fun — we won some big games and played teams really tough,” Hummel said with a smile. “We got our revenge during baseball season, though.”

A middle infielder on the baseball diamond, Hummell appeared in 13 games for the Lions.

“As a team, we had a good season last year and return a lot of key players next year,” Hummell said. “We came up just short of a district championship so that’s the goal next season.” Hummel said.
