WRESTLING RECAP: Redbank Valley, Brockway Earn Dramatic Victories on the Mat to Highlight First Week of Action

CLEARFIELD, Pa. (EYT/D9) — The Clearfield wrestling team kicked off last week with a dominating performance against Altoona, winning 10 of the 12 contested bouts, on the way to a 58-9 win on Dec. 5.

Seven of the Bisons’ 10 victories came by fall, with another the product of a major decision.

Scoring pins for the Bison were Dakota Shugarts (114 pounds), Adam Rougeux (133 pounds), Colton Ryan (139 pounds), Colton Bumbarger (145 pounds), Hunter Ressler (189 pounds), Carter Chamberlain (215 pounds), and Nick Bailor (285 pounds).

Ty Aveni won a major decision at 152 pounds, while Brady Collins and Will Domico contributed decisions to the Bison effort at 160 and 172 pounds, respectively.

Altoona got a technical fall from Dom Nardozza at 107 pounds and a major decision by 121-pounder Braiden Weaver.

Port Allegany 70 – Kane 3
It was all Port Allegany in this match-up, the Gators benefitting from six bonus point victories and six forfeits.

Colton Furgeson (133 pounds), Kelvin Burgess (139 pounds), Aiden Furgeson (145 pounds), Zach Hungivile (152 pounds), and Aiden Biss (189 pounds) notched pins for Port Allegany.

Ian O’Shea won a major decision at 121 pounds for the Gators.

Kane’s only victory came at 160 pounds, where Reece Bechakas earned an 8-2 decision.

Dec. 6

Brockway 34 – Brookville 33

Arguably the dual of the week, Brockway defeated Brookville on criteria after the teams tied in regulation.

The match was decided in the Rovers favor based on total wins, Brockway collecting seven to Brookville’s six. Brockway earned three decisions, three pins, and collected a forfeit, while Brookville had a decision, three pins, and two forfeits.

Getting pins for the Rovers were Colton Ross (139 pounds), Jack Smith (172 pounds), and Gage Park (107 pounds). Contributing to the Brockway tally with decisions were Dylan Bash (152 pounds), Blake Pisarchick (160 pounds), and Jonathan Winnings (285).

Brookville’s pins came from 133-pounder Jared Popson, 189-pounder Easton Belfiore, and 215-pounder Gavin Hannah. Cole Householder added a decision at 145 pounds.

Coudersport 24 – Oswayo Valley 18
In a match where only five bouts were contested, Coudersport scored falls in four – Owen Deutschlander at 152 pounds, John Wright at189 pounds, Gavyn Ayers at 215 pounds, and Lucas Riser at 285 pounds.

Travis Coriaty (133 pounds) got a pin for Oswayo Valley. The rest of the Green Wave’s points came via forfeits.

Redbank Valley 40 – Johnsonburg 35
Daniel Evans (127 pounds) scored a pin in the evening’s final contest to erase a one-point Johnsonburg lead and give Redbank Valley a “walk-off” victory.

The Bulldogs held the lead through the penultimate bout, maximizing an advantage built on two pins, a major decision, and three forfeits.

Sticking their Ram opponents were Trentan Patton (133 pounds) and Garrett Shaffer (285 pounds). Tristan Shaffer had a major decision at 139 pounds for the Bulldogs.

Pinners for Johnsonburg were Avery Bittler (152 pounds), Cameron Larkin (172 pounds), Gage Singer (114 pounds), and Gino Casilio (121 pounds). Rocco Allegretto worked for a technical fall at 145 pounds.

Dec. 7

Clearfield 38 – Penns Valley 24
The Bison scored their second victory of the week, though this one was tighter than the first. Penns Valley won six of the contested bouts to Clearfield’s five, but only managed 24 points while Clearfield earned 26. Clearfield also benefitted from a forfeit and Penns Valley injury default.

Three Bison grapplers pinned their opponents – Charter Chamberlain (215 pounds), Adam Rougeux (133 pounds), and Colton Bumbarger (145 pounds). Brady Collins won a technical fall at 160 pounds and 172-pounder Will Domico took a decision.

Landen Hess (285 pounds) and Jack Darlington (121 pounds) had falls for Penns Valleys. Scoring decisions were 107-pounder Conner Myers, 127-pounder Tripp Watson, 139-pounder Colten Shunk, and 152-pounder Ty Watson.

Curwensville 44 – Claysburg-Kimmel 21
Seven bouts were wrestled, Curwensville winning five – four coming with bonus points. The Golden Tide score was padded by three Claysburg-Kimmel forfeits.

Curwensville got pins from Ryder Kuklinskie (152 pounds), Alex Murawski (172 pounds), and Heath Hawkins (215 pounds). Austin Gilliland had a technical fall at 107 pounds and Trenton Guiher a decision at 285pounds.
Claysburg-Kimmel’s wins came from 160-pounder Ethan Claycomb (pin) and 145-pound Parker Knisley (decision). Other scoring came via two forfeits.

St. Marys 50 – Punxsutawney 9
Punxsutawney jumped out to a 9-0 lead after the first two bouts – a pin at 139 pounds by Jordan Rutan and decision from 145-pounder David Kunselman – after which St. Marys swept the next nine in its winning effort.

St. Marys’ Tristan Dilley (160 pounds), Andrew Wolfanger (172 pounds), Grant Jin (189 pounds), Johnny Bandy (215 pounds), and Owen Tamburlin-Lang (133 pounds) contributed pins.

Jayce Walter (121 pounds) notched a third period technical fall and Ethan Ott (285 pounds) a decision for the Dutch.

St. Marys’ winning effort was also aided by two forfeits.

Dec. 8-9

Darren Klingerman Invitational (Bloomsburg, Pa.)
The Brockway Rovers came home with nine place winners – including 121-pound champion Weston Pisarchick, ranked fourth at the weight in the most recent PA Power Wrestling 2A poll (Dec 6).

Pisarchick took a 13-0 major decision over 18th ranked Chase Shaner of Hughesville to win the title.

Also reaching the finals for Brockway was 139-pounder Parker Pisarchick. The Rover grappler, ranked 20th in the state, had to settle for runner-up status after dropping a 1-0 decision to Warrior Run’s Max Wirnsberger.

Colton Ross, also competing at 129 pounds, downed Alex Hosler of Central Columbia, 6-4, to finish third.

Fifth place finishers for Brockway were Dylan Bash (152 pounds), Blake Pisarchick (160 pounds), Jack Smith (172 pounds), and Jonathan Winnings (285 pounds).

A pair of Rover grapplers were eighth – Gage Park (107 pounds) and Matthew Brubaker (145 pounds). Brockway (137.5 points) finished second as a team behind first place Warrior Run (228.5 points).

Southern Tier Wrestling Officials Association (STWOA) Tournament (Jamestown, N.Y.)
Both Oswayo Valley and Cameron County ventured north of the border to participate in the STWOA Tournament.

Oswayo Valley’s Andrew Coriaty, ranked 22nd in Pennsylvania at 127 pounds (2A) by 2A PAPW, finished sixth competing as a 124-pounder (weight classes are different in New York).

The small Green Wave contingent (24 points) placed 26th and the even smaller Raiders squad (3 points) 27th in the 27-team field.

St. Francis (Athol Springs, N.Y.) won the team competition with 191 points. Eisenhower (78 points) was the highest placing Pennsylvania team.
