Redbank Valley and North Clarion Players, Cheerleaders Wear Yellow Ribbons for Suicide Prevention

CLARION, Pa. (EYT/D9) – They’ll be rivals after the opening tip, but before the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference girls basketball championship game Saturday night, they were united.

Players from both teams, as well as the Redbank Valley cheerleaders, donned yellow ribbons in their hair to remember a Redbank Valley student who died Friday.

Officials met with the Redbank Valley coach Chris Edmonds and North Clarion coach Terry Dreihaup before the game to discuss the ribbons, which are technically against the rules.

Players who could remove the ribbons were instructed to do so. Those who had the ribbons woven into their hair were permitted to keep them.

Coaches wore yellow ribbons on their lapels.

Redbank Valley fans also had a “Yellow Out” theme for the both the girls and boys games against North Clarion.

The Yellow Ribbon Program is based on the premise that suicide is not just about death, but rather about ending pain and that it’s OK to ask for help.
