Oswayo Valley Sweeps Way to PIAA Class A Volleyball Semifinals; Karns City, Clearfield Girls Soccer Teams Fall

ST. MARYS, Pa. (EYT/D9) — The Green Wave have been the Green Tsunami this season.

They swept away another foe on Saturday.

The Oswayo Valley volleyball team drowned another opponent in kills with Olivia Cook and Avaree Kellert leading the way with 15 and 14 of them respectively in a 25-17, 25-20, 25-22 victory over District 5 champion Conemaugh Township.

It’s another first for the Green Wave, who won their first District 9 Class A championship and their first PIAA playoff matches. Now, they will make their first ever trip to the semifinals.

“I would say it feels amazing,” said Kellert, who also had 15 digs. “I mean, my team and I have been working so hard to get to this point and now that it is finally here, it feels surreal.”

Oswayo Valley (24-0) also received 11 kills and 12 digs from Praylan Perkins in the sweep of Conemaugh Township, which came into the match with just one loss this season.

Trinity Lundy had 35 assists for the Green Wave, who will take on District 10 champion Maplewood at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Warren High School.

GIRLS SOCCER

Karns City went into halftime against District 7 champion Freedom down 1-0.

Then a flurry of goals set the match on its ear.

The Gremlins scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half on goals by McKenna Martin and Emma Dailey to take a 2-1 lead, but Freedom was a little too much in a 4-3 double-overtime win in the PIAA Class A quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon.

Freedom responded with two quick-fire goals of its own to retake the lead, 3-2.

With two minutes left in regulation, Sarah Dodd scored the equalizer to send the game into overtime.

After a scoreless first extra period, Freedom finally ended the match.

“It was the type of game where you hated to see either team lose,” said Karns City coach Tracy Dailey. “At halftime, we talked about taking care of the little things.”

Both teams had plenty of opportunities.

Savanna Prescott made a number of big saves and Karns City had a breakaway chance that hit the post.

“She definitely showed up big for us,” Dailey said.

Freedom moves on to play Greensburg Central Catholic in the semifinals on Tuesday.

GENERAL McLANE 3, CLEARFIELD 0

Corner kicks were huge for General McLane.

All three Lancer goals were scored off corners as Abby Walker scored a pair of goals and Kelsey Barger also found the back of the net in the win over the Bison.

The loss for Clearfield marks the end of a remarkable career for Elle Smith.

Smith, who will play next fall at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, finished with 58 goals this season and 180 in her four years at Clearfield.
