CANONSBURG, Pa. — It’s one thing to be seeded No. 1 at the prestigious Powerade Wrestling Tournament at Canon McMillan High School. To be expected to win it all and deliver the title is another.
That’s what Brookville’s Taylor Ortz accomplished Wednesday as he won the 132-pound title at one of the nation’s top in-season high school tournaments. In the finals, he rallied to beat No. 2 seed Zachary Hartman of Belle Vernon, 5-3.
The win capped off a 5-0 run through the two-day tournament, upping his season record to 16-0. The Clarion University recruit stands at 128 career wins, ranking him third on the Raiders’ all-time wins list, two behind former PIAA champion Brock Zacherl who is currently wrestling for Clarion.
In the final, Ortz trailed 3-2 until a takedown late in the second period gave him the lead for good at 4-3.
Brookville also got junior Keelan Kunselman into the medal rounds. He finished eighth at 106 pounds.
