Elle Smith scored three goals as the Bison, who lost a heartbreaker in overtime to Karns City last year in the District 9 Class 2A championship match, rolled to a 10-0 win over St. Marys at Frank Varischetti Field on Monday night to reclaim the crown.

“It means so much to my teammates and I that we were able to win back the district title after last year’s loss,” Smith said. “Although, I think we were a bit disappointed that we wouldn’t be seeing Karns City again, since they’ve been our rivals for so long.”

Alayna Winters and Riley Ryen also found the back of the net twice in the victory.

Smith, a senior who has committed to play in college at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, now has 53 goals this season and 175 in her stellar career at Clearfield.

“Personally, I’m thrilled I got the chance to win my last district championship game,” Smith said. “It means so much to me to be able to share that moment with my best friends and celebrate the victory together.”

With Smith’s penchant for scoring goals, the Bison (17-2) have been an offensive juggernaut this season.

Clearfield has scored 106 goals and surrendered just 15.

St. Marys was no match for them, getting outshot 22-0.

Kaylie Brown and McKenna Lanager also scored for Clearfield, which also benefitted from an own goal by St. Marys.

The Bison will take on the winner of the District 5 and 6 subregional in the first round of the PIAA playoffs on Nov. 8.

“I think that if we can continue to play our games with a high intensity and do the right things on the field, we will go really far,” Smith said. “We have the ability to do some really great things, and I hope to see it in our upcoming games.”

VOLLEYBALL

Kendra Cowan added six kills and Morgan Pasternak, Maddy Crabtree and Emma Delp five each for DuBois.

DuBois will host City League’s Obama Academy on Wednesday with the winner moving on to play in the PIAA playoffs.
