Redbank Valley’s Harmon, Otto-Eldred’s Katie Sheeler Earn All-State Hoop Honors

CLARION, Pa. (EYT/D9) — Mylee Harmon was in shock when she saw her name on the Pennsylvania Sports Writers Class 2A All-State Girls Basketball Team on Monday.

Harmon, who averaged 21 points, 4.5 assists, three rebounds and 5.6 steals per game as a sophomore point guard for Redbank Valley, was a third-team selection.

“I wasn’t expecting it at all,” Harmon said. “I was surprised.”

Harmon was a catalyst for a Redbank Valley team that blitzed through its schedule on the way to one of the most successful seasons in school history.

The Bulldogs went 26-2, won their third District 9 title in four seasons, and advanced to the second round of the PIAA Class 2A playoffs.

Harmon was at the center of it all.

Combining quickness with the ability to slash to the hoop and finish, Harmon was at times unstoppable for Redbank Valley.

Harmon is hoping this is just the first step on her journey.

“We’re going to be a pretty young team next year,” Harmon said. “We have a lot of room to grow. We’re going to be able to run on a lot of teams.”

Running is definitely something Harmon enjoys. She’s also a standout track and field athlete at Redbank. Last year as a freshman, she won the Class 2A state title in the 400-meter run.

She ran that race in less than a minute on Friday at the Butler Invitational, putting her ahead of where she was in the event last year when she didn’t break a minute until well into May.

“I had a PR at Butler for this year,” Harmon said. “To already be under a minute, that’s my goal.”

Her goal for basketball is to appear on more all-state teams in the future.

She hasn’t been able to play basketball much this spring because of track, but she joined an AAU team this weekend in a tournament in Ohio and shined.

“I try to shoot at least twice a week,” Harmon said. “I went with my friend’s team — they invited me to a tournament over the weekend. We went to Ohio and I played a few games, but I’m not really doing what I did last year when I did track and basketball, which was pretty hard. I’m trying to focus on track right now.”

Harmon wasn’t the only girls player from District 9 to make the writers’ all-state team.

Otto-Eldred senior guard Katie Sheeler was a second-team selection in Class A.

Sheeler turned in a stellar season and career for the Terrors.

This season, she scored 22.1 points per game and finished with 1,699 points in her career at Otto-Eldred.

Sheeler was also a big reason why the Terrors won their first D9 Class A championship and advanced to the PIAA quarterfinals for the second straight season.

Sheeler will play next year at Mansfield University.
